Ukraine: A German supplied 'Gepard' anti-aircraft gun shooting down a Russian cruise missile. Despite their detractors, these systems have proven highly effective in Ukrainian service.????

Germany just needs to provide Ukraine with more of them.

Today's wave of Russian infrastructure strikes seems to have accomplished a lot less than some previous attacks. They managed to knock out power and water in Odessa, but most of the country still seems to have kept power after the strikes, even though there are now emergency shutdowns across the country.

Video of a Gepard shooting down a cruise missile

The Gepard reminds me of the A-10 their respective countries had planned to put them out to pasture then an armed conflict comes along that proves their worth.

The Turkish drone technology came from Israel in 2008, so likely that tech would be share with Israel. Quite an interesting pipeline if it is bidirectional the entire way

Per an uncle turboprops were more efficient than jet engines. That was in the 1970's he made the statement. He was an old WWII P38 pilot shooting up German convoys and trains.

Doesn't russia have quite a lot of bears? Lots of logistical merits to a fielding a plane that old. Good parts inventory, very well established maintenance and repair practices. Sure, you can't fly it through airspace crawling with Vipers and Eagles, but that applies to any bomber.

Doesn't apply to B2 and B21 at night. Possibly not to B1.

They have a lot of advantages but I don't know how many of them translate to a strategic bomber. I will say I always felt calmer in the back of a Herk compared to a C-17. I am not sure why but the 130s always seemed more stable when they were low and slow. The Herks seemed like a Toyota Hilux as in it was going to keep flying no matter how many parts it lost.

Good thing the motherland aint got those

I should have left vipers and eagles out of it. I was really trying to say that fielding an old plane with high numbers and high utilization capability isn't the worst thing ever. Useless against a modern air defense, but few countries actually have those toys with the ability to effectively use them.

An UAV strike on an air base near Ryazan damages a Tu-22?3 strategic missile carrier

The Tu-22M3 strategic missile carrier has suffered damage as a result of the attack on the Diaghilev strategic aviation base of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

Photos of the warplane were published online.

It was the bomber with tail number RF-34110 (“02” red) that was affected by the explosion.

The impact damaged the rear edge of the stabilizer. Engine afterburners were also disabled.

TU-22M3 was armed with a Kh-22 cruise missile and was probably preparing to participate in the strike of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

TU-22M3 is a long-range supersonic missile carrier bomber, surrendered to carry nuclear weapons. It is a component of the Russian nuclear triad. Russia used them repeatedly in the war with Ukraine, in particular to bomb Azovstal in Mariupol, as well as to launch a missile that destroyed the Amstor shopping center in Kremenchuk.

Turboprops are a general rule more fuel efficient than jet engines but the engines on the Tu-95 are not of the new variety if you know what I’m saying so any fuel saving is negligible. They also don’t handle weather as well as jet engines because you can fly at higher altitudes in jets than turboprops to get above most bad weather cells. I’d be shocked if after all these years they still have 40 Tu-95s in their active fleet able to still get in the air. We maintain our aircraft better than any air force in the world and we still only have about 60 B-52s left in active service with a few more in storage but the rest have headed for the Boneyard at Davis-Monthan in Arizona.

ISW Update

quote:

ISW is publishing an abbreviated campaign update today, December 5. ISW will resume regular updates on December 6. This report discusses today’s wave of Russian strikes against Ukrainian critical infrastructure and the likely Ukrainian UAV strikes against Russian strategic air bases on December 5.

quote:

Russian forces conducted another wave of missile strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on December 5....The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Ukrainian air defenses shot down 60 of over 70 missiles launched...the small percentage of Russian strikes getting through Ukraine’s air defenses are nevertheless having significant effects on Ukrainian critical infrastructure

quote:

Ukrainian forces likely conducted strikes on two Russian strategic airbases on December 5, inflicting light damage while demonstrating Ukraine’s ability to strike Russian rear areas and possibly disrupt Russia’s campaign of strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure....Still, Ukrainian authorities have not formally claimed responsibility for the strikes as of publication.[6] Russian sources claimed that a Ukrainian drone struck aircraft at the Engels-2 Airbase in Saratov Oblast, Russia, damaging strategic bombers and missile carriers.[7] Russian sources also claimed that a Ukrainian drone destroyed a Russian fuel truck at the Dyagilevo Air Base in Ryazan Oblast, Russia.[8] The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that the strike intentionally targeted Russian long-range aircraft

quote:

Anger over the Russian military’s inability to prevent the Ukrainian strikes on Russian strategic airbases over 280 miles from Ukrainian positions outweighed praise for the latest round of strikes against Ukraine within the Russian milblogger community. Russian milbloggers criticized Russian officials for failing to anticipate and prevent the drone strikes at the Engels-2 and Dyagilevo Air Bases on December 5....Several prominent Russian milbloggers claimed that Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance groups must have launched the strike against the Engels-2 air base from inside Russian territory, asserting either that Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance groups are active inside Russia or – if the UAVs were launched from Ukrainian territory – that Moscow is under threat from Ukrainian territory.

quote:

Russian milbloggers also called on Russian military officials to authorize significant retaliation strikes against Ukraine and intensify counter-terrorism measures within Russian territory.[13] The milblogger community complained that Russian military officials do not consider their suggestions and ignore open-source intelligence (OSINT) and that, had Russian officials taken milbloggers’ warnings into account, the two strikes on Russian military bases would have likely been prevented.[14] Select milbloggers suggested that the strikes on Engels-2 and Dyagilevo Air Bases threaten Russia’s legitimacy as a nuclear power as the strikes damaged aircraft capable of carrying multiple nuclear weapons.[15]

quote:

Key inflections in ongoing military operations on December 5:

Russian forces continued to defend their positions along the Svatove-Kreminna line against Ukrainian attacks.[16]

Russian forces continued to make incremental gains around Bakhmut but have not yet surrounded the city, and conducted offensive operations in the Avdiivka-Donetsk City area. Ukrainian sources claimed that small Russian assault groups of 15-20 personnel are attempting to penetrate Ukrainian lines.[17]

Russian occupation officials continued the forceful transfer of Ukrainian children from occupied territories in Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts to Russia under the guise that the children require special medical care.[18]

Russian forces shelled more than 20 settlements on the right (west) bank of the Dnipro River and continued to strike Kherson City.[19]

Russian senator Andrey Klishas of the ruling United Russia party proposed the Kremlin restrict the ability of Russians who fled the country to avoid mobilization to secure work upon returning to Russia.[20]

Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) reported that the Russian military, in concert with the Russian Internal Ministry, is taking steps to launch an electronic database by February 2023 to document the personal details of all servicemen and restrict their movement even when out of uniform.[21]

IMO, most are gone forever anyway.

Their scientific brain trust left en masse as soon as the USSR fell. Most came to the USA. I have worked with a few trying to develop a market for inventions. They avoid Russian investors like the plague knowing that the vast majority are former KGB, so basically Russian mafia types.

This is an interesting article on Russia's aggressive use of honorary consuls around the world:
Pro Publica article

Experts say Russia is using honorary consuls as part of a strategy to move public opinion in the Kremlin’s favor and, over time, weaken pro-Western governments, particularly in European countries vulnerable to influence. In one high-profile case, intelligence officials tied two consuls in North Macedonia to an alleged Russian propaganda campaign to destabilize a stretch of southeastern Europe.

You would think just from damage to the tail section that the plane would be fixable but I’m willing to bet anything they scavenge that airframe for parts on the rest of their airworthy fleet. Also, someone bled out next to that truck. That’s a lot of blood on the ground in the snow.

Today's target package includes fuel storage at a Kursk airfield. Good daytime video below. Plenty of corroboration on Twitter with multiple videos.

There is some info that there was also an attack in Bryansk but I think it may just be a retelling of what happened last week but some that are aware of the attack last week say that there was one today also. Similar to yesterday one attack got most of the press and the second was verified but never got much traction, this may be the same or not.

Good slow-mo video of the Ka-52 shot down yesterday.

British Defence Intelligence
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 06 December 2022
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE

On 05 December 2022, multiple open sources reported explosions at Engels Airbase, in Russia's Saratov Oblast, and at Dyagilyaevo airfield near Ryazan, south-east of Moscow. Two Tu-95 BEAR heavy bombers were reportedly damaged at Engels and three people were killed when a fuel tank exploded at Dyagilyaevo.

The causes of the explosions have not been confirmed. However, if Russia assesses the incidents were deliberate attacks, it will probably consider them as some of the most strategically significant failures of force protection since its invasion of Ukraine. The sites are much deeper inside Russia than previous similar explosions: Engels is over 600km from Ukrainian-controlled territory.

Engels is the main operating base of Russia's Long Range Aviation (LRA) within western Russia and is home to more than 30 heavy bombers. These aircraft contribute to Russia's nuclear deterrent and have also frequently been used to launch conventional cruise missiles at Ukraine. The LRA is likely to respond by temporarily moving bombers to dispersal airfields. The Russian chain of command will probably seek to identify and impose severe sanctions on Russian officers deemed responsible for allowing the incident.
