Army plans ‘dramatic’ ammo production boost as Ukraine drains stocks
Some key quotes from the article:
quote:
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. ? As donations to Ukraine strain allied munitions stockpiles, the U.S. Army is seeking a “dramatic” ramp up in monthly production of 155mm artillery shells over the next three years, its chief weapons buyer said Saturday.
Those plans hinge on emergency spending for Ukraine that Congress already approved, but also on the more than $600 million in industrial investments in the next tranche of aid as well as multiyear authorities in the annual defense policy bill still under debate in Congress, according to Doug Bush, the assistant secretary of the Army for acquisition, technology and logistics.
“Funding is already in place, contracts are underway to basically triple 155mm production,” Bush told Defense News on the sidelines of the Reagan National Defense Forum. “There’s funding on the Hill, in the supplemental, to more than double that again. That would take a period of years.
“We want to be able to build our stocks not just where we started the war, but higher. We’re posturing for a pretty ? over a period of three years ? a dramatic increase in conventional artillery ammunition production.”
The service in recent days awarded contracts to three private companies to produce and deliver 155mm artillery: General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, American Ordnance, and IMT Defense.
quote:
“We are in a position to support Ukraine, but it’s more the mid and long term,” Bush said. “By creating this capacity ... if this war goes three or four years, we’ll be in a position to just vastly outproduce the Russians all by ourselves ? and if you combine that with our allies, then we’re just dwarfing their capability. They won’t be able to keep up.”
quote:
The defense industry’s lack of robust production capacity for ammunition is a product of “lumpy” purchases by the military, Ellen Lord, a former Pentagon acquisitions chief, told reporters. She said that without steady demand over multiple years, defense firms haven’t been making capital investments in their plants.
“So we have to be clear about the demand signal and the volumes over multiple years, and then industry will develop that capacity,” said Lord, who now works in the private defense sector. “But industry can’t go to their board of directors and say: ‘Hey, I think there’s going to be a lot of orders out there, so let’s spend $50 million to build a plant and hope.’ ”

I have not been following extremely close lately. That Twitter has a map showing a chunk still occupied.
Is Ukraine continuing to make small advances?

At this time only small incremental gains for both sides. I would liken it to a Rugby scrum where they are just pushing each other around the battlefield.

Rybar is not very happy about the Russian airbase strike.

Russia's strategic nuclear forces can be hit with worthless drones.
Russia's nuclear forces are not covered in any way.
Russia's nuclear forces are helpless.
The 60-year fear of the Cuban Missile Crisis is gone, evaporated, avenged. What is there to fear? A strike by strategic Tu-95s and Tu-160s? They aren't protected in any way, gathered in a pile, not covered by air defense, nor from satellites, like a sitting duck.
And what are the pilots doing? They're stuck filing photo reports.
What are technicians doing? They're busy saving diesel.
Today, the US no longer fears the Russian strategic nuclear forces. They're celebrating.

Now I understand the cap of Russian crude from the G7. It pertains only to insurance for tankers which has a cap of $60 only for cargo insurance, not actual price. At present this is a huge nothingburger. Russia is selling at near breakeven of approx $50 per barrel after the 40% discounts it is giving.
Thus, its tits on a boar hog

They shouldn't be using their nuclear strike force to send missiles into Ukrainian apartment complexes and power plants. Russia has created a situation whereby the Ukrainians are compelled to hit Russia's nuclear strike force to defend their own people. This is all on Russia.

Every single time I see a picture of a Tu-95 I just feel sorry for the poor bastards flying that museum. Probably the most uncomfortable, loudest aircraft to fly. I can’t even imagine having to fly that bastard for 8+ hour sorties. That being said you can tell Russia had no idea Ukraine had the capability to reach that far or if they did they are just ignorant, negligent or probably both because you don’t keep aircraft lined up wingtip to wingtip on a flight line near a combat zone. We learned that the hard way at Hickam Field Dec 7, 1941. shite tends to go boom making other shite go boom that is near it laden with fuel and bombs.

We actually modified the HIMARS that we sent Ukraine so that they couldn't be used to fire ATACMS, according to the WSJ:

The drone supposedly has a range of 1000 KM. Lots of military targets to choose from if they can ramp up production.
My sauce(s) in Ukraine told me that part of their TB2 production agreement with Turkey allows them to produce drones in Turkey as long as they share their tech with Turkey.
