Rumors are that Gleason is next

“We're trying to schedule so we can finish work on a block, take a pause and let, say, Essence Fest happen, and then move onto the next block,” said Mark Jernigan, the city’s director of public works discussing the tearing up and rebuilding of bourbon Street.
The plan and timeline were unveiled Friday in a pair of meetings with French Quarter businesses and residents, though city officials said they intend to be flexible as they work through the details to minimize the impact on those who live and work on the street.
The $6 million project will include $4 million from the citywide security plan Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced earlier this year and $2 million from the Sewerage & Water Board for the pipes. But while the safety plan will provide the bulk of the money, the improvements are less tied to security than are other elements of that $40 million proposal, which calls for adding a network of surveillance cameras and license plate readers throughout the city.

What does that have to do with Gleason? It's coming down

Only because the argument is interesting to me...
What harm do these statues cause? Robert E Lee, for example, is an important figure in the history of our country. It is important to understand history, and to tell the story of America in the 1800's, and specifically the Civil War era, you have to include Robert E Lee. To pretend he didn't exist simply because he lost is to perpetuate fraud.
In a sense, the world you describe in your posts is one where only the victors are allowed to write the history books. In this case, though, we live in America. And for years and years people have fought for free speech, free press, and free expression rights. Organizations exist today to ensure American civil liberties. But now we are erasing historical figures from public view because we don't like what they stood for 150 years ago? That is decidedly un-American. I am not sure how someone could claim to be in favor of free speech, yet also favor the censoring of historical figures from public view.
Didn't many of the forefathers of this country own slaves? Should we tear down monuments to Washington, Jefferson, etc?
What exactly is the reason to take this action? Instead of people needing to argue why they shouldn't be taken down, shouldn't there be a legitimate reason to take them down in the first place? What is the expected benefit? What is the actual harm done by keeping them up?
I'm genuinely curious.

Mitch doesn't care. This is one of the most obvious cases of pandering anyone has ever seen. I would be surprised if Mitch even thought of his constituents as human beings.
If I had to guess, he thinks this will propel him to a higher office. Jokes on him though, because at some point the details about any public funding of this will leak.

I hate this one the most. I think mostly because I know they will replace it with some absolutely God awful looking piece of shite.

The statue wasn't built to just mark a point in history. It was put up to commemorate the man and celebrate his accomplishments. To remove it, does nothing to change or erase the history. It's strange to me that the statue exists in New Orleans, which is extremely diverse, has very little civil war history and is a majority black (60% of the population). It is an insult to them and I understand that it would make them uncomfortable to be reminded of that horrible time in their history constantly.

You're right, which is exactly why people are pissed that so much money, time, and resources have been devoted to what up until a year or so ago was a complete non-issue in the first place. All of this bullshite was dreamt up out of thin air by that complete self-aggrandizing, megalomaniacal, corrupt, contemptuous, pandering, used tampon of a mayor. Sorry sack of shite that he is. It makes me absolutely sick to see NO put removing these important historical landmarks above the litany of other "bigger fish to fry" in the city.
People getting shot and killed at a higher rate than anywhere else in the country? Including DURING the actual removal. Who cares? We gotta get these statues down.
Violent crime at all time highs? Big whoop, statues.
Crumbling infrastructure? Potholes that swallow cars? Who gives a shite? Statues.
Public schools a laughingstock? Oh well, statues.
frick you for this stupidity, Mitch. Assclown,

What is the benefit in keeping them up? The harm in taking them down?
I'm genuinely curious as well.
Let's start with they are there already...so the question that goes first is what's the benefit of taking them down? Doing nothing is the easier thing, right?
My biggest problem with all of this is the simple disingenuousness on both sides. Literally NO ONE was clamoring for the removal of any of these statues until very recently, so all the hand wringing about how upset they made black people in NOLA is completely fabricated nonsense. Most people, both black and white, could almost certainly not have told you one damn thing about any of the men depicted by these statues, and as such, have no real dog in the fight when it comes to being outraged or happy about these existence from a "was he a bad guy" perspective.
If you have to gin up outrage, there was none to start with.
So the question becomes, do these historical landmarks add value to the city as simple works of art...since no one was actually upset by them since most folks had no fricking clue who they were?
The answer seems clear...tearing down statues with 100+ year old history in a city that's as known for her history as much as NOLA is makes absolutely no sense, unless you're trying to cleanse it for some other purpose. And from a principle standpoint, allowing ginned up faux outrage to determine large scale changes is never a good idea, so pushing back against that, regardless of what may be seen as a small thing (metal and concrete shapes) is a worthy endeavor.

It's like the Civil War never even happened. It's amazing!
