Marc Morial was a virulent racist and an even bigger crook than Mitch. Didn't stop him from getting a cushy gig.

Isn't there a Civil War museum like 80 feet from Lee Circle?

bulldoze congo square next while we are wrecking history,i mean let's forget this whole slave thing..right?finally people can get over this 200 year old grudge.it's funny how people weren't offended by these monuments until a dumb white man told them to be.

Must be traumatizing. reminding them of all the time they served as slaves. Oh wait, they were never slaves. They live of the government and our taxes.

quote:I've visited DC twice in the past year and went to Arlington Cemetary both times. Went to Arlington House which is also the Robert E Lee Memorial on top the hill, there's an entire area dedicated to his history and speaks loads about the Civil War/his involvement with the Confederacy. So you can STFU.
don't see a lot of war monuments to losing parties anywhere else in the world. why should this be different?
Although it was an ugly time in our history as a country, the Confederacy was still part of OUR country's history, this doesn't have to do with what we did in vietnam, or what mexico did here. It has to do with our country being divided and coming back together as one.
I guess by Mitch standard's we should just ignore that Lee ever existed.

The statue wasn't built to just mark a point in history. It was put up to commemorate the man and celebrate his accomplishments. To remove it, does nothing to change or erase the history. It's strange to me that the statue exists in New Orleans, which is extremely diverse, has very little civil war history and is a majority black (60% of the population). It is an insult to them and I understand that it would make them uncomfortable to be reminded of that horrible time in their history constantly.
Reading this makes me think you really don't know anything about civil war history or who Robert E. Lee even was.
And yes, removing monuments because they may offend someone (strange that they weren't offended by these monuments during the reign of the black mayor) is an unnecessary purging of historical context. Are we going to stop teaching about the Civil War in history class now?

Oh, they're slaves all right. They just don't know it.

The fire department is a joke. Half of them are high school dropouts who sit around in a clubhouse all day and eat. They're overweight and then they complain about their salary. Guy called in last week to Tommy Tucker and said "I only get paid $50,000 a year" my jaw dropped. That's more than policemen and teachers and he's complaining about his salary. What a freaking joke.

I don't understand the holdup.

Good. Glad to see Mitch is looking out for the murder rates. Those rates will definitely decrease tremendously after taking down a couple of these statues. Thank you Mitch for being the best mayor ever.

The very saddest of truths in the world of poverty. The "man" tells you where to live, where to go to school, when to eat, and most importantly, who to vote for, and provides a never ending supply of drugs and alcohol. So very sad, indeed.

Then they/you are weak.
Something like that should be a reminder of how far one has come from how it used to be, and to work hard so that never is repeated. It should be a rallying force. Not something to sit in self pity over.
To remove history is to repeat it.

How long before the SJWs realize the LSU Tigers were named after a Confederate military unit and demand a name change?

They weren't even alive you stupid mother fricker. None of them within even 50 years of actual slavery.
They have as much ground to stand on as I have. My ancestors were slaves to the English crown at one point in history.

Let's take down the statue of the guy that opposed slavery...makes sense.
In a famous letter to his wife, Lee wrote that "slavery as an institution, is a moral and political evil in any country."
Lee thought black people inferior to whites; through his wife's estate, he owned many slaves; and he fought to for the independence of a nation founded to preserve the institution of slavery for economic gain.
