In a sense, the world you describe in your posts is one where only the victors are allowed to write the history books. In this case, though, we live in America. And for years and years people have fought for free speech, free press, and free expression rights. Organizations exist today to ensure American civil liberties. But now we are erasing historical figures from public view because we don't like what they stood for 150 years ago? That is decidedly un-American. I am not sure how someone could claim to be in favor of free speech, yet also favor the censoring of historical figures from public view.
that's the world we live in. a world where the dominant religion is the religion that won out. it's not that hard to see.
the american history we learn in is slanted towards the american narrative. also not hard to see. it is the same in all countries around the world. do you think china teaches history the same way we do here?
quote:
Didn't many of the forefathers of this country own slaves? Should we tear down monuments to Washington, Jefferson, etc?
no. why would we? it was legal. they were presidents of the U.S. we live in the U.S.
quote:
What exactly is the reason to take this action? Instead of people needing to argue why they shouldn't be taken down, shouldn't there be a legitimate reason to take them down in the first place? What is the expected benefit? What is the actual harm done by keeping them up?
i'm not arguing for taking them down. in my opinion they should be left up, with strong historical language educating the populace as to why they are there, as much education about the merits of the person the monument is memorializing and why the battles were important.
BUT, it's also reasonably clear that growing up in the south people have a fun but historical fondness for their rebellion. and part of the reconciliation has to do with the north patting the south on its head and saying, "it's okay little brother. you fought hard. you can keep your toys and trophies".
and that though these historical figures have become embedded as parts of "history" post civil war in communities throughout the south into the present, in most cases historically, this would not be allowed or encouraged. therefore, it's not really that big a deal that they're being taken down.
are you an american? if you're an american, the robert e. lee statue represents a tactical genius commander responsible for the death of millions of americans and the near dissolution of the country within which you still live.
so the question is are you a southerner or are you an american?
also, states rights. taxation. civil war was still about slaves.

Lee didn't go across the Union cutting a 100 mile wide swath in his path, burning and destroying everything. That's ok, I guess, he won, right?

seriously do some research and you will understand the fighting for slavery wasnt pushed till later in the war when the North needed a moral boost. if you really really think it was about the slaves tell me why the Union originally outlawed slavery in the southern states but not the norther states.

i'm super well versed in civil war history. we're just arguing semantics in a super nuanced conversation that people have literally written tomes of history books and analysis, homey.
the winner's history is always part of the narrative. the winners won, the loser's lost and are usually dead.
so...
let's just be okay with that.

yep. sherman totally did. but does it matter?
south lost. this includes my family. that's hard to take. but they did.
if they didn't, you'd still be living in the CS of A.

Possibly and possibly not. Without the manufacturing of the northern states, the C.S.A. might have ceased to exist no matter what, but we won't know. We do know that other than to Southerners, Sherman's March to the Sea is celebrated.
All we have is informed speculation or Harry Turtledove novels.

Is there a place where I can find who made political donations to Mitch? I wouldn't mind boycotting their businesses.

except that when you're an american, the history books are going to call him one of the greatest presidents ever...
so maybe, just maybe this is about historical perspective, and which one won out.
and those who lost, shouldn't be surprised or upset that their historical perspective is no considered valid in war memorializing.
i'd rather the monuments stay up for the education of all. but it's not surprising to me that they be taken down.

because it led to victory. which has been my whole point all along.
those who win get to tell the story. it's inherent.
people would also be shocked to find out that they don't really teach the "War of Independence" in british schools.
it seems that the brits were used to losing colonies and lump our nation's forming into figuring out the whole atlantic empire thingie.
this whole nation-centric thing really isn't that hard to understand.

we're condensing pages of a multifaceted circular argument into one sentence. quit pretending you think you have a grasp on my civil war knowledge and comprehension based on a message board post.

As for Lee, he was anti-slavery and anti-secession. But he decided to fight for Virginia because he couldn't fight against his own people.
Back then, states were much more powerful and had a much stronger identity for the citizens than they do today. They were similar to being separate countries under the same umbrella of "America". Much different from today. Kind of like how the European Union is a collection of separate European countries. British people, when they were part of the European Union, saw themselves as British first.
Lee wasn't trying to fight against America. He was fighting for Virginia.
