quote:

About 1 in 1,000 black men and boys in America can expect to die at the hands of police, according to a new analysis of deaths involving law enforcement officers. That makes them 2.5 times more likely than white men and boys to die during an encounter with cops.

The analysis also showed that Latino men and boys, black women and girls and Native American men, women and children are also killed by police at higher rates than their white peers. But the vulnerability of black males was particularly striking.

“That 1-in-1,000 number struck us as quite high,” said study leader Frank Edwards, a sociologist at Rutgers University. “That’s better odds of being killed by police than you have of winning a lot of scratch-off lottery games.”

quote:

“We believe these numbers, if anything, are a little bit conservative, maybe a bit too low,” Edwards said. “But we think that these are the best that can be done in terms of just getting a baseline risk estimate out there.”

What an awful study and example of journalism

That's a lot of assaults. Who's doing the assaulting?

And police force right behind cancer.

Cancer.

Really?

Cancer barely kills more black men and boys than Police use of Force.

Barely.

94.2%?

The chart shows 3.4%

Any I find it hard to believe that 94.2% of black males die from an assault. That number seems impossibly high.

ETA: Nvm, I see its 94.2 deaths per 100,000 deaths of black males aged 25-29, which makes sense why cancer is so low.

It's the police use of force rate not assault

Complete and total bullshite. Absolutely no way that’s the LEADING cause of death. It may cause a high percentage of deaths, but to say cops kill more black people than heart disease, diabetes or other black people is absurd.

I’m not seeing the “by police” part of this?? I see assault meaning by anyone as #1.

To be fair, we're not sure what the cancer rate would be without all of these young men killing each other. You can only assume it would be much higher.

don't those things state in per 1,000 people or something.

ETA:

quote:

Annual mortality rates are reported as deaths per 100,000 black men ages 25 to 29. Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015. *Figure is the median of 2013-2018 mortality rate calculated in PNAS study led by Frank Edwards.

it is always important to include all information provided. So 92.4 / 100,000 people.

Among Asians and Pacific Islanders, both men and women were less than half as likely as their white peers to be killed by police. And Latina women were 12% to 23% less likely than white women to meet that fate.

How is 3.4/100,000 equal to 1/1,000?

They're probably 2.5x more likely to commit crimes.
