Police use of force

Interesting how this is the only category that requires an asterisk with an extremely cryptic description of how they came up with such a number.

Breaking News!

Old age is responsible for the most deaths of people over the age of 90.

They're probably 2.5x more likely to commit crimes

It's more than that for violent crime. Makes sense they'd have more run-ins with police

Another example of how nonsense grows legs and takes off...

The posted graphic clearly states that these are annual mortality rates per 100,000 deaths for black men between 25 and 29.

Police use of force is 7th on that list, with a rate of 3.4 per 100,000 deaths.

So headline is technically accurate in that it's "a leading cause of death", as long as you count the top 7 spots, but it's misleading and stupid.

Last year, 219 black males nationwide were killed by police. 17 were unarmed.

I can't believe this is a statistically significant cause of death.

How many of the deaths due to police force were justified?

Ages 25-29? What kind of arbitrary bullshite is this?

This is classic cherry picking when you know what result you want.

And the fact that it's 2.5x more likely than whites is actually surprisingly low considering blacks commit violent crime at many more times than rate than whites

How many black men who are killed by police are buying scratch offs?

Also look at it this way...

Blacks 13% of USA
Black men 6%
I'm going to give a rough estimate of black men aged 25-29 as being 0.5% of the population

Now, NYT, I want you to tell us how many murders that 0.5% of the country is responsible for. Then maybe you will understand your data

cool. Can we quit spending money on research for heart disease and other illnesses in black men now?

Sounds like the LA Times has it all figured out.

The actual study is behind a paywall.

Being 30x more likely to die as a result of assault seems like a bigger deal. It also seems like it might have some impact on police needing to use force.

Also didn't know people died from HIV anymore. The fact that HIV is a more likely killer than cancer should also be alarming.

HIV is responsible for twice as many deaths among that demographic so why the focus on what is essentially the 5th lowest category?

Because it supports a narrative and sells papers, that's why.

What's more concerning to me is that there are thousands and thousands of dumb fricks that'll actually believe this.

Even that data is highly questionable. All the other causes of death are from 2015. The researcher is using his own mysterious data from 2013-2018, then averaging it out and shoehorning it into real scientific data.

How do those numbers go down if they don't commit crimes?
