somebody help me understand, can’t a helicopter simply stay stationary until visibility improves? why zig zag around and change altitude?

If you overrule your rich client enough times, they get another pilot. Of course you're still alive, so there's that.
What I’ve told clients in the past is “Hey man, I’ll fly if you really need me too, but if it was my family on board we’d be staying on the ground. It’s your friends and family though so if you want to risk their lives unnecessarily then let’s go.”

just the opposite at work, if someone asks "did you look at the weather?" the response is "why? we're going to go anyway aren't we?"

Call me crazy but if I had a private pilot, I'd not only want him rated but I'd also want some proof. Is there not some sort of training they can go through routinely to make sure they are proficient?

Some people have their income taxes prepared by a competent CPA

Some people bring them to H&R Block

Some people hire Joe's Big Max Tax or whatever

eyewitness from the reddit link says he was flying very slowly, a few hundred feet off the ground, when he passed over the church

then he went off in the direction of that big arse hill in the background of the video and then crashed, pilot must have seen an opening in the fog and tried to scoot through it

I am at a loss for why the pilot didn't just go up, get to a safe space away from the terrain and call in to ATC for a new flight plan. First thing that comes to mind is hanging out around Burbank to wait to clear the airspace made them a little late and the pilot felt pressure to get them to the Thousand Oaks destination ASAP.

My guess is that 2500 was more like 2000 or maybe even 1700 .

I’d wait for a few facts before calling the pilot an idiot. The helicopter was descending rapidly and made a sharp turn into the mountain. The pilot very well could have made a quick decision to save lives on the ground yesterday.

Maybe he COULDN'T climb because of restricted airspace above him because of all the airports in the area. Restricted airspace around airports kinda looks like an upside down wedding cake centered on the airport. Local traffic can fly under each tier of the restricted space just fine, but you can't just have local traffic randomly popping up into airspace used for arrivals and departures into the airport.

In that area, you've got LAX, Burbank, John Wayne, Long Beach and I'm sure a few other airports. It's congested as hell.

Certainly, but here's the difference is usually wealthy are smart and know what they are paying for. If you are being cheap on a pilot, don't freaking fly in bad conditions. If you are being cheap with your CPA, don't cheat the system. If you are being cheap with your lawyer, don't break the law.

It just appears that over and over these private plane accidents are due to pilots flying in conditions above their ability and its pretty much known before take off.

it's easy to Monday morning qb and but for the grace of God, there I go, but if needed he could have asked for a pop up IFR clearance

Oh, certainly. I was pointing out that he couldn't just unilaterally use all the airspace around him.

Whatever went wrong, it'll be a while before the NTSB releases the report answering all these questions.

yep, sounds like old baw was backed into a corner, and as is usually the case with aviation accidents, it's a combination of contributing factors that add up to cause it

If you’ve never ridden in a helicopter, every minor amount of turbulence makes you feel like your stomach is going to fall out of your arse and that the helicopter is going to go down.

Helicopters fricking suck.

Indeed. All I've ever ridden was Blackhawks and those CH-53s in the military. I'll never voluntarily ride in a helicopter again. It just feels like an unnatural way to travel.

From what I am learning after talking to a helicopter pilot, it is not unusual for a VFR flight to rely on Instrument in inclement situations.

He/I are curious to the pilot's background vis a vis training. His contention is that this may be a combo pilot and equipment error. Something may have gone wrong with the chopper during flight possibly in the holding pattern manuevers in the Van Nuys area?

that's the norm, that's what the instruments are for, my jet is fly by wire and pretty big so we have to rely on instruments and artificial feel when we hand fly it

There was a guy saying that you need a visual reference to hover in a helicopter.

At the end of the day, it was probably just pushing too hard (in unsafe conditions) to get to the basketball event. Sad

I'm also betting that he's made trips in similar weather conditions numerous times in the past without incident. If you're him, why would you expect this time you'll end up dead?

eyewitness said this was the heaviest and densest fog he had ever seen in that specific area
