Just watched a house next to me burn to the ground. Cried my eyes out watching it happen feeling helpless. Give an extra kiss to the loved ones tonight. Nothing is ever guaranteed.

I came close to checking out yesterday morning. Lightning blew out and shattered my upstairs hallway window. My clock radio started playing music even though it was not turned on. I cannot get it to stop even when it is turned off. Upstairs air conditioner wiring was cooked. Satellite television box was cooked. Air conditioner and television have since been fixed. Clock radio has been trashed.

I watched a friends house burn in high school. That’s about the most helpless I’ve ever felt. Firemen (volunteers) were incredible. Ran in without even thinking about it. But it was a total loss. I can only assume a flood would be as grueling. It’s not an instant, but a slow, debilitating progression of loss. And there ain’t shite you can do to help.

Yup. I don’t see my folks enough but see them a lot more than I used to.

Had my best friend text me and tell me his mom had a stroke and she’s 65. We have been friends since the first day of kindergarten. After 40 years we are more like brothers.

August 26 will be one year our house burnt to the ground. Lost 25 years of memories and everything we owned including one pet. It was a tough time, but God, family, friends and wonderful people we never met helped us through. Still can’t believe it. I recommend everyone buy a Ting.

Yep. Life is moving along just great. Retired, doing a little traveling, seeing things we've always wanted to see.....................and then BOOM. The dreaded C word. I/we will beat this and the best of times are ahead.

My next door neighbor’s house burned to the ground in August 2021. A retired couple whose disabled relative lived with them. She was obese with multiple health issues.

I woke up about 2 AM and smelled smoke, thinking it was our house on fire. I went downstairs and through my kitchen window I saw fire explode out the front windows of their house. I threw on some shoes, grabbed a fire extinguisher (like it was going to do anything) while my daughter called 911. The couple got out with nothing but the PJs they were wearing and one cell phone. House and contents were a total loss.

The cousin didn’t make it out. House was fully involved and there was no way to get inside. We stood there helpless, knowing she was dead or dying.

When the sun came up the coroner had arrived and I watched them put her burned body in a bag. Devastating and sobering to remember now. I never heard a definitive answer on the cause of the fire. Insurance replaced it so I’m sure it was just accidental.

Can happen to anyone. Kiss your loved ones indeed.

I understand feeling the loss for a neighbor or a friend in a time of struggle or a family death, but where as a grown man order of things does “crying your eyes out” come into the equation?

I cried when my grandfather died and 4 guys I served with.
