My son has an iPad and a phone. He goes from one house to the other and sleepovers and whatever. Sometimes he is left home for a spell and I don’t have a house phone. There are ways of putting permissions on devices so he can’t just do whatever he wants.
He uses his iPad to do google meets with his school friends and they play games while they hang out. It’s actually pretty neat and something I think probably helps an only child.

In fact, two years ago, we had a student who didn’t have a phone at all and she was brought up by the counselor for potential social issues because of it.
Kinda makes you think.

Ours get a specified amount of shared tablet time each day to play games or watch YouTube kids after between homework and dinner time. None have phones. Devices not allowed at the dinner table or in restaurants. We'll occasionally let them play games on our phones in certain public settings, but at this point that's usually only when I take one of them with me to golf and they get bored after a while. They often get more use on weekends if it's raining or we don't have anything going on.
The tablet has basically replaced the TV for them.

My 5 year old has tablet/phone time. But he won't have his own phone until he's old enough to go out to play on his own. His mom and I haven't really discussed it, so I don't know when exactly we plan on that happening, but he will only be able to call a couple of numbers.
He is on his tablet or our phones more than we would like, but he doesn't have free reign and outside of a few games that he plays it's mostly educational stuff.
He does play minecraft, but he's not online with other people and he's only allowed to play on creative mode. So he mostly builds things and mines stuff and crafts things. Some of the things he builds are amazing so I've been letting that go.
Eta: Btw, this will probably be one of those questions where you won't get real answers. No one is going to admit how much their kid is on a phone or tablet, including myself.

When our youngest was 8 we got her a phone so we could keep track of her at cheer and at friends houses. She had it about a year when we ended up taking it and the iPad away. She had friends at school calling her and face timing at all times of night and at times outright bullying her.
After we took it away she became a different kid. She actually thanked us because it had become a stress to her with the constant calls. She started reading books and spending more time outside playing and learning to entertain herself. We have started reintroducing the phone but she can only use it when she is at practices.
So, my word of advice is to closely monitor what she is on and when she has access to it. Don’t let it run her life.

I didn't even have a flip phone or brick Nokia until after college. Guess that's what is wrong with me.

We have a 7 and 5 year old and they both have fire tablets. We limit their screen time as much as possible during the week, weekend mornings they have free reign.
We are upgrading them to legit android tablets for Christmas and will limit screen time and what they can access.
Why? Learning, a disconnect, and on occasion to leave me and the wife alone. My oldest does travel softball and it's also a way to get her to chill between games so she's not running around like a loon. It's become helpful when they are home and I'm still working and in meetings. They actually prefer the learning games/videos over everything else.

Kindergartener has a tablet. No web browser. It’s only unlocked for a certain amount of time every day where you can play a few games or watch Disney plus.

my 11 year old has a Gabb phone which basically means she can text or talk. It has a camera and can download music but that's it. No games or apps. No internet browser. Everything on it goes through an app on our Iphones so we can always see what shes doing. She only has it for limited times at home or if she goes over to someone else's house or somewhere that she might need to call us. Simple rules. Never answer a call or text of someone not in her contacts and report the number and block it if you see a strange #.
It's not perfect and we still have to monitor it but it's better than unlimited access to the internet through all the social media apps out there.
My 6 year old has an Ipad but she can only connect to the internet if we are with her and then it's only to download a game or watch a video and we have to approve.
I was actually at an internet safety night presentation by the Morgan Nick Foundation last night. Scary stuff out there that our kids can get ahold of. Predators around every corner.

I have an 11 year old and an 8 year old.
They both have tablets. Neither have phones.
98% of what they do on their tablets is YouTube. Allowed my 11 year old to have TikTok for a short period of time and that was cut off with the quickness.

I said that I would never have my kid glued to an iPad. That was a lie. Literally the only time we get free time. But I have banned YouTube and he only gets a set amount of time on it.

Kids are active, kids need a phone.
Set limits, hold your kids to those limits.

a cell phone for calling or a pocket computer that gives her full access to all the world's good and evil but can also make phone calls so you call it a phone?

Curious what percentage of parents with children under the age of 13 allow them to have a phone or tablet and what is their reasoning? If so, do they also have unsupervised internet access? This question is not meant to chastise anyone, just curious to the rational for doing so.
I think the pros the technology provides outweighs the cons, especially for kids who will be working around this technology for their entire lives, for the most part. Just got to teach them how to use it correctly, which on the 'cons' side of this coin, is really had to censor the internet. IMO I think its worth it to expose kids to this technology and teach them as much as possible about it as early as possible.
