The absolute worst. She'll probably end up pregnant at 14, continue failing out of school, not participate in any extra curriculars and on the deep web by this Christmas.

Daughter had an ipad at 4. It was also used in conjunction with her daycare compuchild stuff.
I also put together a laptop
She got another one later and uses everyday.
She got her first cellphone (ip7) at 10 and new one (ip12p) at 12.
All are monitored.
And before you start any of this typical OT bullshite about "...kids today don't never go outside", she is athletic and prefers to be outside and playing sports. She loves being on the soccer team. She's like a ninja.

Right, a lot of people in here saying that their kids have tablets, but they’ll never give them a phone! like the phone part is the problem. Most of the hesitancy is the opulence of paying a line for a child, not the things that they’ll see on it.
My daughter will be 11 soon and we’re dragging our feet as long as possible, I will never charge her old WiFi only phone, so for the most part it’s never charged enough for her to use it.
I heard in six grade they allow phones, so it’s like it’s expected. Some cell providers make a dumbed down smart phone that can call up to five people which would be nice.

Absolutely. There isnt much difference for alot of kids between 11/12 (when they start venturing out on their own) and 13/14 (when they start high school) when the parents remain involved. Not every kid at 12 can handle a phone but that remains true at 13, 14, 15, etc. Same with a driver's license...some kids can handle it earlier than others but the job isn't over when the phone is given...it's just beginning. Those that can learn the responsibility that comes along with a phone and the internet will be well prepared as they start to mature more.

Kids are active, kids need a phone.
Mine got one in middle school. She'd do things like staying after school for track or band practice. She needed to be able to call us to come get her, stuff like that. It's not like there are still payphones all over the place these days. She didn't have the need for one younger than that because she was always with a parent or adult.

The problem is that many parents fall into the trap of not wanting their kids to be the outcasts in school without a smart phone, so they give in and buy it. If more parents would recognize the devastating effect these devices are having on their children and stop giving it to them then this would not be an issue. People are blind to the negative effects these are having.

And MANY parents liken the added conveniences of a smart phone (Life 360, parental controls, Facetime/Zoom, etc.)
The devastating side effects don't go away when a kid turns 13, 14 or 15.

Please enlighten me on these devastating side effects.

Curious what percentage of parents with children under the age of 13 allow them to have a phone or tablet and what is their reasoning? If so, do they also have unsupervised internet access? This question is not meant to chastise anyone, just curious to the rational for doing so.
If my kids start after school activities and have to coordinate rides in high school around 13 they can have a flip phone with no internet to make calls and texts from.
Smart phones are literally poison to a young developing mind. Current Television programming is too.
It won’t be easy and I’m sure my kids will hate me for it but parenting is about doing what’s right and best for your kids. Not about doing what’s easy to appease them.

Are you trolling or serious? There is tons of research out there about the negative side effects of too much screen time in kids and adolescents, social media comparisons negatively affecting mental health, increased outlets for bullying and unknown access to predators. You'll kind of need to do your own research but yeah...the internet can be really fricking harmful for people who arent careful

Yup. It’s far far easier to give your children what they want rather than what they need.

So you read on the internet that the internet is bad.
Got it.
Got it.

What exactly are you trying to say? Are you refuting the insinuation that too much screen time in kids is harmful? Are you saying that the internet is safe and harmless for kids? Do you think there is no correlation between excessive screen time, gaming, social media and lack of developing social skills?
What exactly is your argument?

Rationale.
A. The world has changed. The crap that is involved with a kid having such a device is offset by security. Find my phone. Find a friend. All those type apps have a tracker on your kid. You have easy access. Easier that my mom did. Screaming down the street when dinner was ready. You just text. Texting is the new streetlights. Years gone by if you weren’t within earshot of a “DINNER” yell when the light came on, that was your arse. Now it’s if you don’t reply to my second text.
B. Can be a disciplinary tool. The devices are a privilege. They can be taken. I take glee in keeping an old flip phone in a drawer. To show my son what life could be like. I’ve also been known to reboot the home router when he pisses me off. The response was more severe than I could have gotten by beating him, and nobody is going to jail for abuse over the Internet.
Before we had a kid the wife and I said all the things people without kids say when watching kids at dinner with faces buried in a phone. We caved though. And honestly your kid is at a disadvantage without one.

It doesn’t concern you at all that your child respects the internet and craves its approval more than his own father?

That’s pathetic. You realize you just admitted your child does not listen to you nor respect you in person and only responds after multiple electronic communications?

You took the easy path because you’re a lazy shitty parent. You can try and normalize and rationalize it all you want.
My life would be monumentally easier if I just threw my kids in front of a screen and used that screen to navigate their entire lives. I’d be a pathetic excuse for a parent but at least I’d be selfishly happy while sacrificing my child’s life for my own.

My 8 year old has a tablet and has since 5 years old.
We monitor every minute she spends on it and she only gets an hour per day to use it, unless there is something educational that we approve of.
As an only child, she can video chat with her friends and occupy herself if we are busy with something, but one of us is always eyes/ears on what she is doing on it.
