Don't they take a cut then pass along to other charities who take a cut then pass along to final place?
That is a cynical, at best, and blatantly dishonest, at worst, way of describing their operating model.
I can't speak for for all UW branches, but the local one in my area is very well run.
They partner with local non-profits who know the area and the people they serve. UWs model is the polar opposite of "we know what's best." They simply help support local NPOs, many of which don't have the money to fund high-powered fundraising and advertising departments.
If you don't want to give to UW, my local UWs website links to the website of each local partner if you want to just give directly to them.

I didn't read the article fully yet, but I'm going to say that is more bc of Haiti rather than the red cross.
I did read the article fully and you're correct.
This is a poor example to argue that the Red Cross sucks. There might well be other reasons but this isn't really the one.

What an absolutely ridiculous position this is.

I'm not saying it is an ethical or moral way to operate your business, but people are lazy, and the Red Cross gives those lazy people an easy way to donate.
If an organization that spends 90% of their donations on direct support doesn't have the ability to fundraise anywhere close to the Red Cross, how much can they truly help?

CEO of United Way makes about $1.5mil according to their 990
Other execs aren't poorly compensated either

I keep telling people this.
Stick to local charities. I don't trust organizations with large bureaucracies and Red Cross is about as slow, wasteful and politicized as the federal government is.

As a flood victim of 2016 I can tell you the Red Cross is not bad, but there are more effective ways to donate money to help. The Red Cross basically brought me a bucket of supplies that I already had received from friends and family. They also gave me two shovels. The one meal they brought was just weird. It was like mystery meat and some green glop of veggies. Red Cross only stayed about a week or two, they were gone pretty quick.

United Way is different every where. Its an absolutely great organization in Middle Tennessee.

Person who won't shut up about Nashville - "Crime is different everywhere. It's absolutely great here in Nashville. You can just tell the criminals care more and have our best interests at heart."

I just know a lot of folks who work with united way here and I've volunteered with them several times. They do a ton of good.
I have no idea if it's better here than others, I just said it's different every where.
ETA:
And middle Tennessee doesn't just mean Nashville, don't get all worked up over nothing.

I feel like I've heard this before

I went to Dollar General yesterday. They guy at the register asked me if I'd like to make a donation to Red Cross. I said "shite no" and he replied "OK have a nice day".

I've heard this time and time again. They show up at first. Give some meals, blankets, a few supplies and then they are out of there. I've read they take about 20% to 25% of the money for admin cost. What they do put in the local community for longer projects gets doled out to local groups who then take their admin cuts also. None of the numbers they claimed to help in Haiti make any sense. It's all funny math.
For those saying the Red Cross poor track record in Haiti is because it's Haiti is untrue. Other charities have built 9000 homes while the Red Cross has built 6.
The Red Cross is a big institution that is great at raising money, but sucks at using it to help people. If you want to have a bigger impact do like others said and find local or regional groups that will spend more time helping and will put more of your money towards helping.

Wow, Red cross on par with talcum X, when it came to haiti.
He raised a lot of cash, and the $$$ was never seen or heard from.

I donated to J.J. Watt's effort. The sports franchises are really stepping up. ! And it's all going to relief.

during katrina, we jumped through hoops to get some things in that red cross had requested from the bizzness i'm a part of...we get the stuff in and red cross called and said they had changed their mind. i asked my coworker to give me the guys name & number that called...i called him and completely lit his arse up...red cross was at my bizness in less than an hour picking up those things and using their credit card to pay for it.

Not true. Him and his buddies have flown around to many places and held meetings. This was done using the raised money. They ate and drank like gluttons.
They are yet undecided, all these years later, about how to use the rest of the money to help Haiti.
Also, the Red Cross bought blue tarps for Haiti. Meanwhile, the Haitians sit their in squalor as the suits and rappers hold meetings about releasing the money, While burning through the money at resorts.

Worked a shelter outside of New Orleans for a week after Katrina. We sheltered about 1300 people. All local volunteers. Doctors set up a medical section. Local groceries donated food. We served 3 hot meals a day. Churches were magnificent. People worked 18 hours a day.
About day 4 the Red Cross showed up. Right before lunch about 12 of them took volunteers places in serving line. They all had nice little red vests and they brought a camera crew. Worked for 15 minutes, smiling for the camera. They left before meal even over. We never saw them again.
I knew nothing about the Red Cross before Katrina. Now I wouldn't give them a cent. Red Cross sucks.

How?
I am not saying you are wrong, I am unfamiliar with the process between donating and victim reception. What is the money JJ raised being used to accomplish?
