It kind of is his responsibility. Churches are supposed to be resources of the community. It's why they are tax exempt. By initially refusing to help the community in its time of need he just exposed himself as the sham that everyone already knew that he is. By backtracking when he gets negative publicity it just further enforces the con.

I have heard they do not have enough food though. So there are ways he could help and assist in the efforts other than offering his prayers.

Is that the Christian thing to do?

I haven't seen them post a sermon that proves them right.

its not his or the churches responsibility. outside of that, Is the Houston PD able to man another center that can house 10's of thousands of people? Do they have the facilities necessary to support people living there without putting them in a worse situation than they were already in? You dont just open the doors and it is kumbaya

Are the atheists in this thread criticizing Joel still mad that your mom made you go to church instead of playing star craft on Sunday?

Joel Osteen is a great man

Joel Osteen made the vast majority of his money off book sales. He puts in a lot of money and time working with poor kids and families not only in other countries but right there in TX. I've done research on his church myself and personally know a man who goes to his church. They on a daily basis are pouring money and definitely time and hard work helping poor communities. Joel and his wife donate to many different charities and they also get out and get their hands dirty and also many times prefer to do it off camera.

I understand people get upset about the money he makes, but if I wrote a book and sold millions of copies, I'm gonna live nice also, while putting in money and time to help others. I am not myself an Osteen fan. As far as this situation, from account of my friend who goes there the church was flooded. He agreed Osteen could have released a better statement. Many members are out working tirelessly trying to help while they are mostly in a bind themselves.

It doesn't have to be but it should be. The churches in the BR/Denham area saved lives and assisted in ways that the govt couldn't and didn't. And I am talking about 5 different religions that personally helped me and my family last year. They ARE morally responsible as Jesus taught us and they should know that.

its not his responsibility to open up his building to let people stay. Thats why we have all of these government agencies and buildings that we designate as shelters that way pay huge amounts of taxes to fund. And it could be argued that this situation with people trapped is because of governments failure to try and get people to evacuate. That is not a Joel Osteen problem.

I agree and disagree. His church so whatever, I agree he can do what he wants. He doesn't pay taxes though, again church so whatever, but I think a bit of public servitude is expected in exchange. If not codified he can do what he likes, but he's a douche and profiteering off not only his congregation but the us tax law as it stands. And lots of small government people argue that we shouldn't have these huge public safety nets and rely on the generosity of private entities -churches in particular are given as examples - but when push comes to shove those avenues aren't always available.

Frick Joel Osteen, it raises lots of interesting topics though.

I live in North La and have no affiliation with that church. As I said above I do know someone that goes there and have looked into his church. I don't like his preaching style as I'm more old school with how I like my preachings. He does not take a profit from his church. His money is made off book sales. The church members are out working trying to help people whether its at other evacuation centers, or in the boats themselves. From what I've been told Osteen is busy himself trying to help. The church was pretty much inaccessible and they also felt within the incoming days it would just get worse and didn't want 100s of people to just be trapped, again.

this is a different situation than a small congregation that can house 20 people. if he lets thousabds of people into his building, he is then responsible for them. if that turns into a superdome situation not only will his church get damaged, but then the headline will be joel osteen kills evacuees and has them living in squalor. Like I already said, a building of that size will need a large security force, supplies, facilities for people to shower and use the restroom, etc. we arent sure what he may be doing behind the scenes, but if he feels it isnt time or the government cannot execute their portion of providing security at the facility, I just cant see letting thousands of people come in. heck, he may have approached the government but they said they cant handle it at this point.

frick man, we all heard the horror stories in the dome of people getting robbed, raped, shitting and pissing on the floors.

No it's not, but I also don't put much stock in your evaluation of logic. You may think the government's role is to protect and provide for everyone, I do not. It's our role. Churches and similar organizations should lead that effort.

The government setting up shelters is not at the top of my list of overreaches, but would it be nice if it were completely unnecessary due to the plethora or organizations that already fill that need in their communities? Of course.

We are Christians telling him that it is his responsibility. If you're not a Christian and are speaking from your perspective as a citizen, your point may be valid but is largely irrelevant to what many are talking about.
