Do you believe my business should also be non-taxable?

As part of his tax exemption he is supposed to operate with the public good in mind. He clearly violated that pact until getting shamed by a Houston reporter.

This is such a contrived outrage story.

Yeah. He closed the church because there was flooding as close as a block away and now people have shamed him into this nonsense.

I think the guy is a total scumbag but I won't shite on him for this.

Just bc he isn't legally obligated to do something doesn't mean it is also a morally correct decision.

Part of the problem is that Joel Osteen isn't one of the people paying 'huge amounts of taxes'. He's a con man with a very successful business and the government allows him keep every penny tax free.

If he was truly a Christian, the doors would be have been open and he wouldn't care if his property was damaged from those needing shelter. In fact, I'm willing to bet that his 'followers' will be asked to pay for the damages whether insurance will cover the costs or not.

Why do people hate this guy so much? He doesn't take a salary from the church. What's wrong with selling books?

Businesses pay taxes Doctor.

Churches and their esteemed clergy* pay little if any taxes.

Osteen is a businessman posing as a cleric/shaman/preacher.

He made a business decision to open his church to refugees.

*Lay clergy (snicker, snicker) are the exception and have my respect for that aspect of the donation of their time.

And it could be argued that this situation with people trapped is because of governments failure to try and get people to evacuate. That is not a Joel Osteen problem.

It wasn't any of the churches' responsibility around the BR area to help house people and help them with recovery yet they did without closing their doors first and without giving it a second thought. And not only do they not make the kind of money he does, but they actually are in business to help people and give a damn, regardless of your religious beliefs. He is a phony who got caught not practicing what he has preached. No pity for him.

I don't hate him. My wife used to watch him and read some of his books. He seemed like a decent guy. The problem is though if you make a shitload of money off of a community as a church and you don't give back in their biggest time of need.....guess what, you are a hypocrite who doesn't deserve to be in that position. Churches should be held to a higher standard when it comes to charity and goodwill and people really are going to need genuine help here.

I get what you're saying but it's not like he's having his balls busted for not opening the doors to his 17,000 sqft house, the church belongs to the people. Osteen is worth $40 million, he could write a check for any damage. I'm just glad his true colors were shown. Mega-church pastors and their money.
