With four years of experience, you should have a certification. A CPA is a haul, but there is no reason not to have your CIA if you plan on making a career in IA. That will get you in a lot of doors, especially entry-level ones.

The company said they were “going in a different direction” and “they didn’t see the need for my services going forward”. The company is a well respected public accounting firm.

Would you happen to know if the company is laying off others? If you were singled out, these are usually HR ways of saying your work product wasn't sufficient. You need to reassess your work habits and productivity and decide if this is the career path you want to take.

With four years of experience, you should be able to find audit work in a decent-sized city. There are some remote opportunities out there as well. Try the industry side of IA instead of working for an accounting firm. You may enjoy it more, and your work product will reflect that.

ISO 42001 is blowing up right now. He should get his IS 27001 lead auditor cert then get trained on 27017, 27018, 22301, and 42001.

Agreed, I've actually got to get 42001 myself in the near future. We're not doing them yet, but shouldn't be long.

I can promise you with 100% certainty the average senior manager in public is making right at 175k in Houston

I am an IA SM at a Big 4 firm in Houston. I'm not divulging exactly what I make, but you are in the right ballpark with your average salary assumption, although I do make more than $175K salary before bonuses and any other monetary rewards.

I was never told why and was never on a PIP, but I do feel as though they let me go for performance. I was ex-big 4 and came in with a higher salary than some of my peers. As such, I think they had a little higher expectations from me. The firm I went to was a regional firm.

rubbish...

a machine is better at accounting than a human...Its not so good with a patient compared to an actual human, who then directs the machine where to go/do

I would say this is rubbish.

Machine makes double entry because it's stupid, human has to go in and reverse.

Put in for an offshore operator job. You can obviously spell correctly so you’re already smarter than the rest of us.

You have B4 experience and 4 years at this firm but haven't passed the CPA nor the CIA?

Use the time available to you to get on that ASAP.

This is business as usual at Big 4. They know they can walk into any university and cherry pick the best and brightest, keep them for a while, and if they aren’t on the partner track, let them go. Now is the time they are bringing in a fresh batch of Summer interns to keep the cycle going.

Don’t take it personally; use it to your advantage by playing it up on your resume. If someone asks why you left, tell them you were tired of the travel or you wanted to grow roots in a company instead of jumping from client to client to client.

The state of LA is always hiring auditors. Perhaps you can get on with them as a stop-gap until you can find another job.

Nola. I’ve been looking at everything including remote work. Most of my experience is in SOX controls testing, ITGCs, and risk and compliance for medium sized companies.

Why haven't you already passed either the CIA or CPA? You've been with this firm for 4 years. Most likely, they had the expectation that you'd be studying and doing this. At firms, the general rule is move up or move out. Nobody stays at the entry level. Even thought you didn't have a PIP, you probably weren't meeting expectations, even though they may not have been clear with you about it.
