Why? Shitty beaches and shite brown water. And you still live in fricking Mississippi of all places.
Good seafood. The beaches are pretty to look at even if the water is brown. I like the highway that goes along the coast for miles.

I recommend the coast easily. I can't pass on being an hour from Nola and Gulf Shores

Most folks stay out of Jackson as a whole. There are a lot of great places to eat and drink (mostly Fondren area), but otherwise no real reason to go to Jackson. It's also relatively safe if you stay out of west and south Jackson.
I live outside of Madison (in the county). Still like living in Madison for the most part. It's safe, well patrolled. Far enough from Jackson to avoid a lot of crime. I like our neighborhood. It's a relatively new neighborhood and not really a high drama neighborhood. Some are worse than others. Depends on the covenant nazis or Real Housewives of Madison County.
Ridgeland is nice, but not much buffer between it and Jackson crime. Public schools are good. A lot of retail space in Ridgeland. My office is there and I have only had one or two issues with crime (being approached and intimidated in the parking lot. Glock resolved those). Office put up a fence that stopped foot traffic to a nearby apartment complex and problems stopped.
I lived in Belhaven (part of Jackson). Lots of crime (mostly break ins), but I did have some who had been car jacked dumped out in the street in front of my place. I moved not long after (my car got broken into as well).
It's been mentioned that it's cliq-ish. Pretty true statement. I've been here since college (94). I have friends who are from here, but most of my good friends aren't from here. It's not that people are rude, but it's not welcoming. I'm not sure its even intentional. Louisiana is much different in that regard. I would explain it this way: in Louisiana, if you have half a personality and walk into a bar you will walk out knowing 20 people. I Jackson, if you have a great personality and walk into a bar there is a good chance you might leave knowing nobody.

Grew up in the North and moved to 6 different states since adulthood.
I can say without a doubt that Louisiana people are the absolute best with their hospitality.
On my first day living in Baton Rouge I was invited to someone's home to watch the 2003 SEC Championship game after attending a church event earlier that day. I cannot express how culturally different (and awesome!) Louisiana is in that regard as it compares to other states but Northern and Southern.

Cool place but high cost of living. Better to live just across the state line and visit.
