I mean, I agree with the guy that Chicago extreme winter cold is worse than southern heat. I'd definitely take 30 over 98 most of the time, though.

Meh. Those are summer months. He didn't make it very far up everest. His marathon at -4* is impressive "in shorts" considering he was properly covered in his upper body which is all that really matters when running. I've run a half in 20* with shorts at the start of the race. Not that big of a deal.

When I arrived in Fairbanks on assignment, I was subjected to two straight weeks where we didn't get ABOVE -20. Talk about shock.
That April. I woke up one day and stepped outside and thought, "finally, decent outdoor running weather". I put on shorts and a t-shirt and took off.
Came home. Flipped on TV. Turned on the weather. Current temp. 29 degrees!
LOL. I would have looked at your arse like you were high if you wanted me running in shorts in 29 less than a year before.

I would disagree. I lived in Wyoming and actually just got back from a site visit in Minnesota.
I love the cold. I enjoy shoveling snow and using snow blowers. I like driving in the snow. I look to get out more as long as there is snow on the ground. I don't find it depressing at all. It makes the house feel super cozy and comfortable.
The engineer in me loves the extreme cold to see how things do at their design extremes. How well do cars start, how building envelopes perform, etc. Give me extreme cold over extreme heat every time.

Personally I enjoy the cold, I don’t get depressed in winter. That’s when I’m the happiest.

Well you have less sunlight which means Less vitamin d. So I'm not sure that's actually truthful.

Neither is Bill Nye, but people seem to hang on his every word.
I think at some point it just feels "cold" but how that cold impacts your body and the environment around you can vary depending on how cold it is.

I have a bernese mountain dog that will sit outside on our roof deck when it is 30deg outside for hours. I took him outside to use the restroom this morning and I have never seen him want to get inside quicker (I'm in Chicago)

Interesting cherry picking of your data and how regions are grouped (conveniently splitting AR and LA into a separate region from the "south").
How about this, look at actual state data. I'm talking about those three states in particular. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama EACH fatter than EVERY state in the entire midwest (MI, WI, IL, MN, OH, and hell...even MO) except IOWA.
Lotta red down there.
But hey, I'll give it to you, on the other end to the spectrum the talent among the females is also impressive (from what I've seen GA and TX are amazing)...but also so many fatties.

The only seasonal depression that I have seen myself is the pacific northwest. the lack of sun is a huge driver for that. That is well documented in Seattle.
My family is littered across the north from Montana to Minnesota and everywhere I have been up there the people were beyond nice and very happy people. I have never heard of a similar type of depression in areas that are just cold.

"Minnesota nice" exists for a reason. I too noticed how nice and down to earth people in Montana were, and I still am taken back a bit by how nice people in Wisconsin are when I go back.
