id much rather the 98 in the summer than the 30 in the winter, no doubt. ill still go outside during the summer and run or play golf or something, but i dont frick with this cold weather. my arse is on the couch

Temperature is just weird.
A couple of years ago it was 40’s in La and felt cold right to the bone. Got on a plane and went to Colorado. That evening in Co it was in the teens and it was much more comfortable than it was in La in the 40’s.

0 even with wind chill, is a sucks but manageable if you dress right. About par to our most humid and hot of days.
This -20 shite is a different beast, especially with the wind. It's not just the pain but the world has to shut down because we haven't built it for this sort of cold.

I recall a night where it was -42 in WI when I was a kid.
The dog had to go, but he reallly didn't want to. Damn near had to toss him out the door, after which he pissed 3 feet from the house and immediately came back in on three paws.
Have been snowmobiling at -15 and that wasn't a big deal. Leather snowmobile suit obviously helped. Chest did get a bit cool during some sustained higher speeds though. Not sure what the supposed wind chill is at 80MPH at that temp...

Read To Build a Fire by Jack London. Great story and paints a vivid picture of the effects of deathly cold on the human body.

The moisture in the humid air in Louisiana caused more conduction of your body heat through your clothing. Dry air doesn’t do that as much, which is why it “felt” warmer in Colorado

Agree 100%. We were stationed in MD and the base's land jutted out into the Chesapeake Bay. Felt colder than NY due to the wet cold. That sucked even worse combined with the fact the wind was always blowing.

I can tell you that coming out of winter in Fairbanks, AK, it is super common to see people in shorts and t-shirts in April while it's 35 degrees outside.

It isn't really that big of a deal. Wear the proper clothing for the situation and it is fine. The biggest issue is when you get far enough below zero, you don't want to walk outside without eye protection.
Otherwise, long johns, good coat, thermal socks, stocking cap, hood, quality gloves, etc. will keep you comfortable.

there was a guy in grad school with me that was from alaska. he wore shorts, short sleeves and flip flops when it was in the thirties and forties here. it was unreal.

its all about the humidity
humidity changes how cold the same temperatures feel
as an example, if its 10 degrees in minnesota it can "feel" about the same as it would if it was 30 degrees in new orleans, all because the difference in humidity
