On the issue of whether the wood spacers between layers of lumber should be reused instead of being discarded, we do align somewhat, although I had never considered that a political issue.
I prefer to use those strips of wood as firestarters in my fireplace. My local Home Depot lets me take them for that purpose for free. I had never thought about using them as weapons in a melee because they are too thin and break too easily.
