Pandemic results in fewer drivers, less tickets, hurting NC’s bottom line

quote:

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The NC State Highway Patrol reports fewer people are on the road since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. It means fewer tickets being handed out, which hurts North Carolina’s bottom line.

“All the sudden one day cars weren’t on the road,” First Sergeant Christopher Knox said. “People were at home.”

In 2020 state troopers issued 60,000 fewer tickets or a 20% decrease than in years past.

Knox said state troopers issue citations to help prevent crashes and save people’s lives, but it all adds up.

“From a couple hundred-dollar citation to a mandatory court appearance where someone would have to show up,” he said. “That would mainly be related to the speed at which they were going.”

The anticipated millions in fees and fines would go back into the community where the driver broke the law

I'm not seeing where this is a bad thing.

Meanwhile, school zone camera tickets in NOLA continue to operate while schools operate remotely

This is when I say frick them.

The budget should not be dependent on people breaking the law.

I would support fines and fees supporting police budgets be an illegal activity.

You mean we're not excited people are better at following the law?

It proves what we’ve all suspected for years. It’s about revenue generation, not public safety.

It seems like having to issue fewer tickets would be seen as successful police work.

There was a guy on Rogan a few years back who was a former police officer from Baltimore. The area he patrolled didn't have much crime and he caught a lot of flack for not arresting as many people.

The sad thing is, while other professions are having to tighten their belts due to reduced revenue, the FOP will demand funding at regular or higher levels to compensate.

Here the city council took over $1 million from the Louisville Free Public Library budget to "fix" it.

They'll still get their pound of flesh without the ticket revenue.

Not just the FOP, pretty much all government agencies at all levels.

Private sector has been hammered hard by Covid. Government? Just another day in paradise baby!

Just in to the newsroom, "Armed Highway Bandits complain about lack of victims. Film @11."

Back to Biff and sports, "that's a nice dress Biff, new?"

Good. I once got pulled over in North carolina and Barney Fife not only wrote me a ticket, he took an hour to do it, delaying me on a 12 hour trip to get back and see what damage Hurricane katrina had done. I dont know what his deal was but he ran my plates multiple times, called in backup, and asked me multiple times if i had a gun in the car.

My friend's dad was a cop. One day he told me that his dad would sit at the exit for the hov lane and pull people over for not having multiple occupants in the car. I argued that if he was trying to help he should sit at the on ramp to keep those cars from getting on the hov in the first place. All he was doing was generating revenue.

Should be like it is in Louisiana, the state police get no money from their tickets.
