You can get sticker for alarm companies off ebay to put in your front and back doors.
Q
We have 2 dogs and an alarm. We live in a pretty quiet neighborhood but it's new orleans so you can never be too careful. Dogs barking are great deterrents.

They found my secret stash of cash (about $300)

When I lived in an apartment and someone broke in, the insurance adjuster asked me a few times about how much cash I had in the apartment. I had a big change jar but he wanted to know if I kept a few $100 bills in my sock drawer or wherever. I kept saying "no" and he said that I was the first person he's ever taken a claim from who didn't have a cash stash.

They came in through the sliding glass door. It was locked and I had a wooden dowel in the slider so it couldn't open. The thief took a crowbar and pried an opening between the side of the door that didn't open and the wall and moved the dowel.

I am near Bham and we have had a few break-ins in the neighborhood. Each incident revealed it was someone who did not have an alarm and was without a dog. Get one or the other or both. The 3rd item to consider is a handful of motion detector solar lights and a Hi intensity security light to leave on each night. Thieves hate a lighted house and will move on to somewhere else.
Your thief may have been someone who knows you and knew what you had there. Check local pawn shops by calling each one to describe your items taken.
Good luck.

How about an alarm system. If nothing else the sound will run them off.

Agree on the dogs, we have three. Why hasn't someone invented a motion activated sound system that has crazy dog barking!!! Anyone want to make some $$?

Curious how would a gun have helped in this situation? It would likely have ended up stolen as well.

I don't normally leave lights on

You should leave lights on even in the daytime if you're not there. Also turn on a small radio or something especially living in an apartment.

OP is just saying that he now realizes he needs a firearm for self defense because he had the,"come to gun god", moment when he realizes you have to have a firearm to defend himself in this world

Be careful for about the next three weeks. I got broke into a few years back. Got ADT at the time. The rep told us if there is a repeat break-in it usually happens within the first three weeks. He said the biggest deterrent to a burglar, one of those security system signs you stick up in your yard. Just dob't put it close to the road. Someone will steal it from you.

Sorry to hear. The worst part, for me at least, is what is does to your psyche.

I used to leave the doors unlocked if I was just going to be quick, never once thought about being robbed, used to leave my shite all over the house...

Then I was broken in to twice in two different houses, and now I can't go ANYWHERE (and I'm talking even to the grocery store at 2 PM) without thinking at least once about getting robbed. I have two cameras in my house and an alarm that I use when I leave to go anywhere. The worst is when I'm going out of town for a few days...

Anyway, hopefully you get over it better than I do. An alarm could help...mine is so obscenely loud when it goes off that I can't imagine anyone even trying to do a quick grab, but who knows.

I mean, this is pretty much true. Even with an alarm activated, they have 30 seconds to take what they want without the alarm even sounding. Then minutes before someone gets there. If you have an alarm, advertise the shite out of it so that they don't even try. Once they have a door open, they're probably going to take something, not just leave because they don't have the code.

What he meant was you were the first honest person he had taken a claim from.

He even gave you a few opportunities it sounds.

I imagine he felt a bit vulnerable coming back to his home and realizing someone had been in his home.
