I hear ya. Last winter around December or January I just didn't have time to change my own oil, so I went to a Jiffy Lube.
Almost $90 and that was with a $20 off special for being a first responder.
I usually change my own for less than $30 total.
Complete ripoff.

The dealership doesn't even charge that much. The frick is this OP talking about? And that's for sybthetic, a systems check and a tire rotation. All for less than $100. Even at luxury dealerships.

Been using synthetic for 20 years. Change filter and top off at 7000 miles . Then full change at 7000 more

FWIW I doubt that includes euro cars spec'd for the latest synthetics or big trucks that require tons of oil. Even economy cars are coming with 0W-20 these days.

Yes, the entire Multi-billion $$ vitamin/'natural' supplements, homeopathy, essential oils industry. All junk science, 'magical' claims without any evidence-based research...
But regarding getting an oil change, the bigger racket is not just the oil change, but their 'multi-point inspection' always results in your vehicle needing an air filter change, flushing of various lines, new brakes pads, etc....

The air filter and wipers are always what get me.
I know there are a ton of people out there who pay these mechanics a ton of money to change air filters and wipers. They probably wait an additional hour for it to get done when they could do both in about 10 minutes at home.

Wrong. V8 tundra driver. 5 quart bottle of 0W-20 costs $19 on amazon, obviously don't use both bottles, fram extra guard oil filter is $6. So it costs me about $35 dollars to do it myself. I do it more because I enjoy it. As for my wifes car, it's about 6 inches off the ground, not bothering with all that.

2. Change your drain plug washer
3. Show me a good synthetic for $4qt.

I change it in my truck so i don't have to take my giant truck camper off for a shop to do it. And it's super easy to get under the truck without a jack. It holds nearly 4 gallons of oil and the oem filter is cheap.
Otherwise no way is it worth my time to DIY oil changes.

My area of expertise is the earthmoving heavy equipment field, but as part of my job I once was part of a team that had to study the automotive oil change industry, specifically their cost structure, as Cat was placing a greater emphasis on preventive maintenance services. What I found out was pretty surprising.
First, when it comes to oil change places, the say "you get what you pay for" is very true. Basically, if you're going to a place that changes your oil for a far cheaper price than other places, you need to ask yourself why they're so much cheaper.
These cheap oil change places keep their costs low by using sub-par parts and sub-par fluids as well. Using cheap filters & fluids will not protect your engine properly and will thus shorten the overall life of your engine. What's worse, oftentimes cheap oil is not blended properly to last to the extended oil change intervals that's common on newer vehicles.
So while you may think you're doing right by getting your oil changed every 5,000 miles as per the manufacturer's recommendations. What you're not taking into account is those recommendations are based on the proper filters & fluids being used in the automobile. If your vehicle service interval is 5,000 miles and you're running oil that loses proper viscosity before that mark, you're putting excessive wear on the engine and risking engine failure.
So my advise is before allowing any oil change place to service your vehicle, ask to see what filter they use and make sure it meets the manufacturer's specs. A cheap oil filter can also lead to engine wear and even failure. I've seen it happen. Same thing for the oil. Make sure it meets manufacturer specs in viscosity, blend, detergents, and overall lubrication.

The "latest synthetics" are just a different viscosity, not more expensive.
Mobil One is top shelf and the only way you are putting anywhere near 100 dollars worth of that in is with a diesel truck.

Mine is 55 for a full synthetic in a tundra. You're getting screwed.
