Yes, I want to stop paying to subsidize Hollywood so it must mean that I'm just jelly. Keep digging that hole.

Which taxes? Cigarette taxes? So, you're dumb AND trashy. Representing the film industry leaches well.

Having a government that interferes with the markets and subsidizes Green Lantern does not provide benefits to the state. Sorry.

Really no benefits? There is a valid argument over if the pros of the credits outweighs the cons, but to say that there are no benefits is an outright lie.

Yes, you do have to convince ppl we live in a democracy. If you don't want your tax dollars going to film credits move your arse to texas.

I would ask that UNO and LSU students to pay for their own tuition and not use my tax dollars. I would ask LSU medical students to pay the full cost of medical education and not have the state pick up 30% of the cost with my tax dollars. There is are a hundred different ways in which government wastes my tax dollars that have less of a benefit than the film tax credit. What benefit is it for me or the state to subsidize UNO or SUNO students to get a degree in african american or women and gender studies? What benefit is it for LSU to receive my tax money and still refuse to stop wasting money on one of the hundreds of ways it wastes money?

Cigarrette taxes were not the only taxes raised. I am not going to post which ones affect me because that is for me, my accountant and the state department of revenue to know. LINK

What about the guy who does business with Hollywood and pays his taxes? Do you want to screw him over too?

Let me get this straight.

You want government to stop subsidizing higher education yet want government to subsidize the filming of movies like Green Lantern?

Wow.

Nope. The tax credits is a dangerous program and Fiscal nonsense. It's welfare for Hollywood and it needs to be severely limited or outright eliminated altogether. The return on investment on these tax credits is not high and significant enough to warrant the price tag.

We're essentially paying Hollywood to film movies and scout other locations, hell, I wouldn't be surprised if we're funding shoots in other states and out of the country indirectly.

There is a major flaw in the bill that was just passed. It has a 3 year sunset and it doesn't have a "hard" cap. The cap is limited at $180m for each of the three years. But, if I obtain the credit, and get hit by the cap, I just wait till year 4 to cash in my credit. In other words, in year 4, the state budget could get overwhelmed by people cashing in their credits from the prior 3 years. Their is no limit on qualifying for the credit during the 3 years - only a $180m cap on who can collect in each of the 3 years.

Yes, LA is actually covering the taxes. The credits given can be auctioned off, or they can be sold back to the state for cash. The state paid out over $250 million in real money last year.

It's a bad deal for Louisiana taxpayers. Google it and you'll find a ton of info.

I think there's your answer. Lot of people sell products to the movie industry. Yes, it's good for the state. We need to do everything NOT to screw this up.

Everything to build those movie sets are purchased from Louisiana businesses.

They can be purchased by taxpayers to lower their tax liability to the state. You can save about 8% doing this.

I found it appalling that the state spent more on Green Lantern than UNO. Our return on investment would be higher on health and education spending.

The green lantern is a good movie, UNO is daycare for single moms and drug dealers

Green Lantern was a better investment

If there weren't so many loopholes and so much fraud then yeah it would be beneficial.

I work in the film business. No longer in the state of Louisiana but I follow what's going on their closely. In the end I think film helps local economy. I honestly don't plan to return back to Louisiana so this issue is not affecting me. I do think it helps the local economy in the end.

I know the state wants to look at what taxes they get but they really should look at the big picture. The amount of materials bought locally a for one production: construction supplies, food, props, office supplies and every little run needed to grab that random item is bought in house. Instead they buy from businesses locally most the time.

Two weeks ago I was working in this really small town (literally 8 stores max in their Main Street). Well, they had a eye doctor place with sales on sunglasses. After four days the owner said they had sold over 4,000 worth on sunglasses to crew members shooting there that week. How that was the most business they ever saw in such a short time. So there are other places that benefit from the business outside of the business.

Would rather give 200mil a year to Hollywood producers than feed the bloated govt machine. Any day. All day.

I believe those same credits are used for the video game companies that opened offices in BR.

There is a separate tax credit incentive just for software development and digital media. It is 35% payroll credit and 25% production expenses.

That is huge.

I agree with much of what you said above, but then it seems pretty disingenuous coming from a guy that wants to keep a program in place for admittedly his own gain. Are you any different?

But yes the state has much bigger issues than taking it to the film industry. Cutting back on state workers and our large amount of public universities vs. population would be good starting places, this is why Jindal has been such a massive fricking disappointment. He could have done a lot of good for the state because he had pretty much unanimous support early on, but cared too much about positioning himself for his next job.
