And yet most people that come here have nothing happen to them. Amazing.
which is cool, but you shouldnt portray it like there is no risk. Im sure you'd warn friends or family if they were visiting, would you not?

Same way I would in any other major city. There is risk everywhere. It's naive to think otherwise.

the NOPD is in shambles right now and the criminal element has really gone into "tourist" areas like the FQ moreso
Right. So just avoid the tourist areas, along with the non tourist areas.

I've been 3 times in the past 2 mths and had absolutely no problems whatsoever. As well, I have been going to the Quarter, at all times of the year, for over 20 yrs and have never had any problems. Just treat it like you would any other large city, keep your wits about you, if you have any questions, ask any one of the 50+ cops on patrol & they can give you good advice. As for it being a dump: Funny that it is completely sold out for the French Quarter Fest, for Jazz Fest and was packed the Friday/Sat of Easter wkend. As it is every year. Go & enjoy yourselves.

Just beware of where you go after dark . They will scoop you in an ally and you are toast. It still has that special place feeling. I used to live to go there back in the 80's. Took a bag of red bud and stayed stoned for 5 straight day and then back offshore. Not sure if it is as safe today as it was back then.

Ritz Carlton is nice. The neighborhood near it isn't so nice.
Most of the bad shite happens within 2 blocks of Canal St between 1am and 3am.
General Rules:
- Don't drink down to your last brain cell.
- Put your $$ in your front pocket (don't carry a purse) after dark.
- If somebody bets you they know where you got your shoes the answer is "on my feet on the street"
- If somebody asks where you're from the answer is "HERE" - Nobody fricks with locals. Locals are crazy.
- Don't be adverse to taking cabs. Great place to do party favors. Nobody pulls a cab over. Be sure to ask the driver if they want a hit.
Rules for Dealing with Cops:
- No matter what they ask and how stupid it sounds at the time - Comply. "Get off the lamp post" means Get off the lamp post.
- You can walk down the middle of the road pouring a Hand Grenade on your head singing "Yellow Submarine" and a cop won't bother you - Just don't do anything that may cause a fight: NO racial slurs, NO cutting in line, etc...

Hang out at bars near State Troopers I guess. I wouldn't count on NOPD to do much more than stand around and people watch. The only problems I've ever had could've easily been avoided, but I've still never been robbed or killed. I don't hang out in the quarter, but I have been known to frequent bad parts of town
This reminds me - There are several "Cop Bars" down there that generally cater to locals and have very little trouble since they are hangouts of off-duty cops.
Among them:
- M's Erin Rose
- Johnny White's No-Name on St Peter (actually that whole strip across from Preservation Hall is pretty safe... Boondock, Yo Mama's)
- Fahy's Irish Pub

There are places in the quarter that you just don't want to venture to.

I kept thinking about advice to give and then felt like I was talking to some countrified rube.
Just stay in main areas if in doubt.
And on Bourbon don't go past St. Ann or you may get arse raped.

New Orleans is probably the second most unique/coolest city I've visited behind New York City
