Most are, yes. Even the other boroughs like Brooklyn are a helluva lot safer than NOLA. Sorry your city is crime ridden.

Honestly, yes, the Quarter has gotten worse. Likely nothing will happen to you but there is still an increased chance from 8-10 years ago in the Quarter.

That is about what I figured. Thanks.

Or you can just admit that New Orleans tourist areas are a hell of a lot more sketchy than NYC tourist areas.

are NYC tourist areas generally geared towards late night drinking?

And yet most people that come here have nothing happen to them. Amazing.

What security concerns are there that weren't there eight years ago?

In 8 years our society has changed a lot. The white man is the devil now. Police are your enemy and black lives are the only lives that matter.

The reported lack of police/policing was my main concern. I think my inquiry was answered. Thanks.

More likely than not, you'll go to New Orleans and have a great time and nothing will happen.

However, random acts of crime are far more prevalent there than most other places. It's gotten to the point that these random robberies, hold ups, shootings, stabbings, etc. have become the norm.

What used to "shock the locals" has become just another criminal act.

It wasn't that bad for Mardi Gras. Maybe 1 or 2 shootings during the week I was there leading up to Tuesday

Only 200 people out of 380,000 are murdered. Pretty safe!

So I'm moving to Austin from New Orleans. I visited Austin for the first time last weekend (yes, I was moving sight unseen). Anywho, I actually got uncomfortable with how safe Austin was Really messes with your head when you let your guard down a bit.

I've already put out a bet I'm either murdered right before we move from here or I get robbed in Austin the first week when its never happened here in NO.

What would shock the locals today often goes unreported.

You mean you didn't have to keep your head on a swivel, avoid side streets, and be tucked in for 2??!!

You're about 10 years behind. That is what we would say when crime wasn't in the FQ. Now it's fair game for locals and tourists. The tourists may not be the intended targets but you have to watch your back.

Its generally safe for white people, but you should definitely stay alert, stay in a big group, and dont go walking long distances late at night. Even from deep in the Quarter to the Ritz id be hesitant to walk past midnight if i was a group of all girls. Call an uber.

Link to the abundance of murdered tourists that the media has apparently swept under the rug?
