quote:Recent crime in Ruston, LA, has included arrests for sex trafficking and child pornography, along with charges of second-degree murder and domestic abuse. Law enforcement has also sought the public's help in locating a robbery suspect. The town is generally known for its college-town atmosphere and historic downtown.
Google crime in Hammond, LA:
Recent Incidents (2025): Recent news reports in 2025 include a fatal shooting investigation by the Hammond Police Department and an incident where three men fled a gas station after a crash, reportedly with "machine guns". A man was also arrested in 2025 for the kidnapping and rape of a woman from a local Target store.
While the Houma-Thibodaux metro area is considered one of the safest in Louisiana, Thibodaux's crime rates have been reported as higher than the national average. Recent news reports from 2025 detail numerous arrests for property crimes, drug offenses, and violent crimes, including a fatal shooting
While crime statistics show high rates in Natchitoches, recent police reports indicate a decline in several categories in 2025. Local officials acknowledge the high crime, particularly concerning the city's murder rate, while also emphasizing recent operational successes.
Declining crime (2025): The Natchitoches Police Department reported a decrease in several crime categories for the first half of 2025 compared to the second half of 2024.
Homicides were down 500% (from 5 to 0).
Robberies were down 400% (from 4 to 0).
Burglaries were down 28%.
Motor vehicle theft was down 40%.
High overall crime rate: A late 2024 podcast from the Natchitoches Parish Journal, citing Neighborhood Scout, noted that with a crime rate of 68 per 1,000 residents, the city has one of the highest crime rates in the country. This podcast also specifically discussed the city's high murder rate.
Recent homicide investigation: In late October 2025, a woman was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after confessing to a fatal shooting on South Drive.
Unsolved murders: As of May 2025, news reports highlighted the plight of families of murder victims and referenced 36 unsolved murders in the area.
Law enforcement operations: A March 2024 operation by Louisiana State Police resulted in over 50 arrests in Natchitoches Parish for drug and weapons charges.

Wouldn’t they want as many students as possible to attend so they can make more money?

The demographics at LSU have changed a lot in the last few years. 60% white, 19% black, 10% Hispanic. There’s no doubt there has been an effort to increase the black population. La Tech is only 11% black and Bama is 12%, and it’s not like those schools are doing nothing to attract more diversity. These are approaching ULL and ULM numbers.

I have a lion and tiger. SELU was a good school. No way would my kid go to LSU today.

I brought my daughter to a prospective student tour, before she started College in 2018, and the audience for the tour was LARGELY minority, shall we say. She ended up at Ole Miss, not because of me, but it’s just where she felt more comfortable. I’m still not over it even though she’s graduated and gotten her Masters.

Reading through this thread, and lsu sounds like a shithole. People clown on A&M and its culture, but I’ll take that everyday over what I’m reading in here.
No one in this thread is happy about it…
This is a recent trend

How sad is it that all of these LSU grads hate what it's become and won't send their kids there? I'm one of them. LSU was such a huge part of my growing up and it's turned to shite. My kid's going to SLU. It's depressing.

You in fact do not need to submit ACT or SAT scores to LSU to get in. So there’s that.
Posted on 11/3/25 at 9:20 pm to theliontamer
Yes. It is not even close to the same school as it was 10-15 years ago.

Unless there is wholesale change at the upper levels of the Ole War Skule, I will encourage my almost high schooler to look at alternate universities. The collegial atmosphere I remember back in the early 2000’s is just not there anymore. The mixture of “culture” and continued push of liberal ideology along with the lack of leadership doing anything to strengthen academics while closing the school to those who should not attend is baffling.
Being able to enter the “Flagship University” without submitting a standardized test is a joke. I agree with multiple other posters who point out that grading at schools is not universal, but the ACT is.
Every year there are 2 more dorms built it seems. Ridiculous.

Went to the UCLA game last year and haven't been back since if that gives you any indication. It was a terrible experience from start to finish.

Theres a lot of colleges like this now.
ACT scores pretty much dont matter anymore. They go off highschool grades that are mostly fabricated by lazy teachers and easy curriculum

At one time LSU was the flagship university. It should have higher standards like ACT score of 26 or higher. It is often said that Louisiana has too many four year colleges, and we also have adequate 2 year colleges and Technical schools. Let those kids that don't score a 26 go to the lower tier schools.
How ironic that we want National Championship football teams along with baseball and basketball. We recruit the best of the best for athletic programs, but now we lower the academic standards for a race to be below average.

Its gotten that way over the last several years
If you want a quality experience you go to Disney or Universal. If you lower your entry rates you get six flags. LSU is now six flags, while most flagship schools are expecting the Disney/Universals higher standards

This was true when I was at LSU in the '80's. We even had bars to go to down Highland but you knew don't stray far off Highland. Also had a coed stabbed to death one night in the parking lot of The Bengal. That area has been bad for fifty years.
