Entirely anecdotal, but my friend was housesitting/watching this teeange girl this weekend at the parents' baller house. These people had a freaking giraffe taxidermed on their wall that they shot in Africa. Lots of crazy shite. Well, as we talked, I couldn't believe the lifestyle this 16 year old had. They've been "having a problem with her sleeping around".. like it's an acne problem or something. She has no curfew, has two cars, etc. The parents are out of the country currently, traveling and enjoying their rich life while daughter gets banged by the 3 black dudes who came over Friday night and went up to her room. Not making that up.

Like I said, entirely anecdotal, but all her girlfriends were over doing the same thing - no curfew, they all went out at midnight, etc. I feel like all of their parents should have done the whole "no kids" thing.

So that's what I'm operating from. I'd guess that most people have my experience more than yours, but I could be wrong. Also, voluntary vs. involuntary is a crucial distinction in my hypothesis.

You are wrong. A large chunk of my group of friends are childfree by choice (as the wife and I are). They are all great people. Of course, they are my friends so I would like them. But we have a very large, very active group of friends.

I have met some horrible people that are childfree by choice, but the same is true for parents. I don't think there are dividing lines based on this decision.

People struggle when they meet/know other people that have made choices that seem to be the opposite of the choices they have made and those choices seem to be working out really well.

It's basically the reverse of confirmation bias.

This is the type of people I know. Hell, in the last 5 years, we have spent a month in new orleans, a month in indonesia, another month in new orleans, a month in africa, plus visited 5 other countries. both the wife and I volunteer, and have wide variety of interests (acting, bird watching, crafting).

These are the type of childree people I hang around with.

And, if you temporarily accept my premise that they're generally not the most enjoyable people, I think the question is whether they started that way (selfish, whatever) and that's why they didn't have kids, or whether they weren't originally that way, and people bugging them about kids or the lack of life fulfillment brought them there. And I don't have a good sense either way on that.

I think it's an interesting idea. I wonder about these things often.

When it comes to happiness, I know many people point to their children as major sources of happiness. Same is true with spouses, friends, and family as sources of happiness.

I feel like happiness can be found apart from those things. For example, if you are a religious person, I feel that happiness can be something that originates from a relationship between you and your God, and everything else pleasing in life serves only to contribute to that happiness. Those other things in life aren't necessary for true happiness, as you experience it, because that's not where your happiness originated.

I think children can contribute to happiness in life, as well as heartache, but I don't think they are necessary to be happy in life.

I don't know if I'm right about this, but I guess my general take on everything in life is that each person is responsible for his own well-being. If you're relying solely on someone else, you've let yourself down.

Agreed. What kind of reasoning is it to have kids just to potentially better society?

People who try to tell you how to live your life do so out of jealousy to make them feel better about their own life decisions.

You many not think it is selfish but in a vacuum, it is selfish for productive citizens to not contribute to the future of society beyond their own life while white trash and hoodrats create dozens more new problems.

Also, the size of your wallet probably doesn't matter much as either you're a good parent or you're not but good parents are much more likely to be found in the middle class to wealthy demographics as they're just that for a reason and got there though people who considered it their responsibility to contribute to the future of a great society.

I would say that it is selfish to bring more people into current shitshow world just to appease your bullshite desire for validation.

I don't owe society anything. Nor does society owe me anything.

I think that the kind of pessimistic, troubled, narcissistic, self-absorbed people (pick one) who gravitate towards not wanting kids, definitely shouldn't have kids. I also think that when two people like this find each other, they should prepare for the other one to leave them at any time. The kind of people who view kids as a curse, are the kind of people that view their SO as a curse at some point. If your girlfriend thinks her life is better without kids, your girlfriend probably already has Plan B and Plan C ready to roll out when she realizes you aren't enough.

I've never seen this happen.

But maybe the ones you have, feel as such because they cannot fathom life without their children.

I'm all for people who do not want kids, not having kids. Last thing this society needs is more deadbeat parents.

We have friends who do not want kids because they will be a burden to their lifestyle. I applaude them for recognizing this.

People who don't want kids probably won't make great parents, but that's still no excuse for not having kids. You need to have children in life, there's just no way around it.

Sounds mature. Ironically, that seems less selfish than the people who can't find happiness unless they bring a child into a world with 7.35 billion people. Seems selfish that some people believe that a child isn't special unless it came from their sex organs and shares their fricked up genes. But if you really want to see warped and selfish, look here:

quote:

Nothing can replace the love a child has for his parents.

^ People who can only be fulfilled by brainwashing a child to worship and take care of them. What sad, boring people.

Reading his/her father's posts, I already know your kid sucks and really wasn't needed on this planet. At least they have the excuse that they didn't ask to be born. Your only excuse for procreating is because you're scared scared to die alone. Pathetic.

I just wanted to quote this from Blue Velvet to recognize that you went hard in the paint, my dude.
