It's not worth anything until you sell it. If you never sell it, then it technically is a financial loss for you.

Seems like a total waste to spend a lot of money on watches, shoes, or high end clothes. Most couldn’t tell the difference between a $150 shirt and a $30 shirt anyway. It’s white. It’s got buttons that go vertically down the center. Just like every dress shirt.

I think most could tell the difference but a big portion of them wouldn't care about the difference for the price.

Take your analogy. Get 100 random people that wear dress shirts from cater-waiters to denizens of Fortune 500 C-suites and hand them two dress shirts sans label and tell them if they can tell you which is more expensive you will give them $1,000. One is a $30 cheapo and one is a bespoke shirt made with a cotton twill double twisted Supima from a cloth manufacturer like D & J Anderson with real MOP buttons and close to 100% of those people would get it correct. However, a large number of them would not appreciate the difference enough to pay 10x the price for the higher quality shirt.

The same is true with watches. Hand someone a Lange or a Patek along with a Fossil or a non-GS Seiko and most could discern a significant difference in quality but a very limited number of those would see value in a watch that cost many multiples of the other.

It isn't being able to appreciate the difference it is about appreciating the value of the more expensive item. For some there is zero extra value with the increase in price, for some there is extraordinary value.

The picture below is what most would see as a rather unassuming watch. I would sign over the deed to my house (I would throw in my complete accumulation of watches also) tomorrow in exchange for it, without a second thought.

One man's old watch is another man's holy grail.

I bought a high end fake Rolex Submariner to see if I’d wear one. It is the same size, weight, movement etc and you have to take it apart to tell it’s not real. I like looking at it, but only wear it a few times a year, so there’s no point in getting an authentic Rolex.

Our current society mostly runs on cheap Chinese junk that we throw away constantly because none of it is made of any significant quality.

For all the positives of technology, one major drawback is a very short lifespan. A $1,000 iPhone is all but junk in 2 years with a battery that fails etc.

For many a high end watch is about the craftsmanship and longevity.

I buy $100 sneakers and throw them away every 6 months, nobody thinks anything of it. Most would think you’re nuts if you buy a $1,200 pair of boots but you’ll own them for decades.

I don’t understand watches at all anymore. Totally antiquated thing unless you’re a diver.

Out of all the cool things I like to spend money on, a watch has got to be at the bottom of the list. If that makes me trashy then I guess call me Duke the Dumpster Droese.

No, not trashy at all. Not everything has to be your interest.

Nah, just practical. Also, I think you’ll find that for the most of us, the older we get, the less we give a rats arse what others think, or if they’re impressed with us or not.

All guys need a hobby/passion. It’s healthy. Mine is wine. Some guys are golf, watches, fishing, etc... Life is short. As long as you are financially secure to support your interests, enjoy.

Everyone has a vice, be it watches, trips, cooking, cars...

I know a guy with a authentic Rolex Daytona and drives a Honda Accord.

To each their own...

OP's position is fine if your expectation for a watch is that it will keep accurate time. Expensive watches are more about flash and jewelry than timekeeping.

I went through a phase where I only wore mechanical watches. I spent too much. The fact that they didn't keep accurate time drove me crazy. Some certainly do, but then you are spending thousands for accuracy, when even better accuracy can be had in a quartz or digital watch for $25.00.

Now my preference is for high quality analog watches that keep good time and are easy to read. I presently wear a Vaer quartz watch (Swiss quartz movement-extremely accurate) and sometimes wear an old school Timex easy reader with date. When I look at my wrist I immediately know the time, and can be assured that the watch is accurate.

I don't know why not GAF about expensive watches might be considered trashy. I think the opposite is more apt to be true.

I am very leery every time I am in a business meeting with a guy with a big ole Rolex on his arm. I don't know why but my first impression is they are a little sleazy. I am trying to get over that.
