Yeah, the machine operators in our warehouse are the poster children for temperance and moderation. They wouldn't get loaded at ALL if they were told it was fine to have a drink over lunch...

If they have that little self control when it comes to alcohol, they're probably already doing that anyway.

My dad worked 80 hrs a week most of my childhood. While it afforded us some nice things, I did miss out on a fair amount of quality time.

Honestly, most of my life skills were learned through my time in Boy Scouts. I wanted to be an Eagle Scout just like my dad. Perhaps that was some sort of attention thing.

While in college I decided not to be a doctor like my dad because of the work life balance, although I realize that varies depending on specialty and such. Right now I have a great work life balance, and am able to spend a ton of time with my kids.

For my college summer job, I delivered building materials and worked 90 hour weeks all summer.

I could do it because it was only for 3 months and I knew there was an end.

But the guys that did that every day for their jobs with no end...they were all on so many stimulants and pills because they would only sleep for a few hours a night, if any, because it was the only time that they had free time.

I don't know how people live like that.

I truly don’t think we’re far from a worker’s revolution in this country. It’s gotten ridiculous. Cost of living has continued to go up and wages haven’t in almost 20 years. Groceries have gone up, housing up, rent up, insurance up, daycare dramatically up, basic necessities continue to rise
Yet people are spending exponentially more on non-necessities.

If the 8-5 became the 9-4 i doubt we would see any drop in productivity.

For most people hour 1 is a warmup and Hour 9 is a wind down.

the 40 hour work week is all but obsolete these days for most professional jobs

I guarantee the vast majority of people could fit what they do in 40 hours in 32 hours

I know I could

I guarantee you I could fit the work I do in a whole week into about 10 hours...

Yes, I think the U.S. has an archaic system when it comes to what is considered normal work hours.

Go to countries in Europe and people are usually amazed at how many hours the average American puts in at the office.

Also, I like that the norm in many European countries is to have a couple beers at lunch, whereas many American employers would frown upon this.

European countries also generally highly, highly discourage people from dicking around on Facebook or VikingDroppings during the workday as well. Americans "work" more hours, but I would be almost certain that productivity per hour is lower. We tend to blend work and personal life in a way that is weird to them. No more running to the doctor or picking up the kids during work hours.

Trying to justify the number of labor hours put in. If you work a shitload of hours and it's just to pay bills and survive is not the American Dream.

No thanks. I’d rather make less and have a reasonable work/life balance. I know a lot of plant people who work schedules like that. 6 or 7 12’s a week. frick that.

No you don't. You want to work the hours that the school is open.

Yes. Most good jobs require people to work more than 40 hrs and also expect them to be responsive to email on nights and weekends. It is a problem for leisure time and wellbeing.

Are you going to pay me a higher wage to cover the hours that I’d be cut?

No, you aren't a man until you come home from a long day so work too tired to play video games or satisfy your wife in bed.
