I love the idea of a 9/80 work week I wish my job position allowed for something like that.

My sister has it and she’s traveling every other Thursday night for a longer weekend.

Parental neglect, with parents being at work too much
nope. Dad needs to work. Mom needs to stay home. But both Dad and Mom want to keep up with the Jones. So, they both get full time jobs and end up neglecting their kids.

Regardless, my original post in this thread was more about the GED holding plant and field baws that think they "gamed the system" by making 100k a year working 80 hours a week.

Considering the few jobs available at any pay rate for someone with no skills and only a GED, if they can make 100K/year regardless of the hours it takes they have "gamed the system"

Let's compare it to western Europe. Being better off than india, Africa and China doesn't really move the needle

So completely discount 90% of the world's population to prove the point. Got it.

You are just dependent on an extremely volatile commodity or you'll be making $9/hr at Lowe's after you got laid off.

Unless you have zero debt. Then if the oilfield tanks, you could work 1 week a month in the field and still save around $800 a month with all bills paid. More time at home. You could also of course make good investment decisions so that if the oilfield tanks, your investments pay for everything and all you have to do is build upon your investments not needing to be in the oilfield at all. You work from home and maybe put in 40 hrs a week and take vacations with the family whenever you want. When the oilfield is booming, if you go and buy stupid chit and blow your money, then you WILL of course end up working a $9 an hour job..............

Neither did I. It's called scholarships. 7 years of college. 2 degrees. 0 debt.

Congrats! The american taxpayer paid for your expensive education. Bernie Sanders would be proud.

Congrats. If there is a downturn, i can work 1 week a month, 80 hrs a month and be at home relaxing for 3 weeks out of the month considering i have zero debt. Then again, in 4 years i will be out of the oilfield making north of 300k a year working from home. Gotta have goals to work for yourself rather than someone else. Work your own hours, be your own boss................

I'm sure a typical non college educated oil field worker takes this strategic approach.

You would be surprised at the number of college educated people in the oilfield

No I wouldn't. There's a lot that are and there's a lot that aren't. I'm not lumping the engineers and the rig guys in the same boat.
