Jesus you're just trying to be combative at this point. Or you're really dense.
He's simply asking if there should be a general societal change in the way we think about the average work week. It's really not that complicated.

I think regardless of reason (be it family, travel, volunteering, whatever), it would be beneficial if we shifted our mindset about work. We glorify the workaholics when we should really aspire to be high performers regardless of hours put in at "the office".

There's nothing stopping a private company from doing this now. It would be a decent recruiting tool to advertise that full time employees work 32 hr weeks vs 40 (or whatever the difference is) as long as the pay is competitive. I'm not sure how that would work for hourly employees.

40 hrs a week isn’t terrible. vacation/paid time off policies are the bigger issue.
10 days of vacation is really limiting. Especially if your company doesn’t give much time off around Christmas or Thanksgiving. If you don’t live near family, you become really limited on how to divvy up your days if you want to have a 1 week vacation, travel during the holidays, and then have random days off throughout the year for personal time or long weekends.
I realize that many jobs will give you more vacation time as you advance in your career but that isn’t the case everywhere. Also, many vacation policies are extremely restrictive and can be problematic for key personnel.

I know exactly where you're coming from. My dad worked a lot to make sure we always had what we needed growing up. He taught me some, but I had to learn many of the basic stuff, that dad's teach their sons, on my own over the years.

No, there's not. But not many are doing it.
Interestingly, many of the major companies (primarily in tech) are going about this issue differently. They know they demand long hours from their employees, but instead of reducing hours they are making their offices a much nicer, more lax, friendlier environment for their employees so they don't MIND being there as often as they are.
Sleep pods, lax dress codes, letting you bring your dog, provided day care, free food, etc. Google is the most notable example of this. I visited the Google offices near me a while back - they've got devoted rooms for video games and even a soundproof music room with instruments that employees can access any time.

Yeah, the machine operators in our warehouse are the poster children for temperance and moderation. They wouldn't get loaded at ALL if they were told it was fine to have a drink over lunch...
For the record, I do think that the "standard" work week for most workers in the US is pretty damn grueling, but I'm not sure how to fix it. Monday through Friday, I usually spend about 55-60 hours at the office and I'm usually in on Saturday and/or Sunday about every other weekend to get work done without anyone to bother me. Not going to lie, it really sucks sometimes but otherwise I'm not sure how I'd get all my work done. I guess I could save 5 hours per week not posting on TD...

No, I'm not at all. I just think too many people make assumptions about what OTHER people are doing or how they SHOULD be doing something different, without really having a clue.
People have a shite load of free time. It's what they choose to do with it.

Companies wouldn’t do it unless the government told them to. Real talk. It’s why we have so many people working 80-90 hour weeks
