Yes. The 5-10% that have no interest in being there are ruining the education experience for the other 80%. 10% is Honors and AP and will get their education regardless, in classes away from these kids.

If you or anyone around you can't see the value or easiness of a high school education then you shouldn't have to come.

Id say yes and give that decision back to the family. I'd also support directly tying how much federal or state financial assistance someone can get with the amount education they have received.

Forcing someone to go to school on Mr and Mrs Tax payor then paying someone to not work again at the courtesy of Mr and Mrs Tax Payor doesnt make much sense to me.

We need to change it up and realize that not everyone needs to go to college. You pretty much know by middle school who is cut out for college or not. If not, starting in middle school they diverge down the trade path, with classes focused on financial literacy and life skills into specialized trades by high school.

There's already options for that but you usually can access them until the kid's Sophmore year.
Can we please stop repeating the "schools need to teach trades" cliche that's thrown around here so much? The career diploma has been an option for kids for more than a decade and there were career options before that.
It's time to start blaming the students/parents. It's not politically expedient but nothing is going to improve until that happens.

I get what you’re saying but that would be abused.

I would argue that the parents and students involved if the student isnt actually interested in a skilled trade are abusing their communities by creating unusable public schools.

The damage these lost students are causing to everyone around them is incalculable. I knew a kid freshman year who was valedictorian from a bad urban school who was in remedial classes for every subject. Good kid, had two parents who pushed him to succeed, but he wasn't prepared for college because his HS was barely operating at a middle school level.

They have to dumb down the classes and standards so badly for the lost students that no one else is prepared for life. And that's setting aside the bullying and threats of physical violence the successful urban students have to deal with every day for actually caring.

As much as I love capitalism, shite has gone down quickly with items like these once we as a society deemed having two people work so we can spend more money.

We should go to the German system and split the college prep kids and the trade school kids in 8th grade. Trade school graduates at 16 with a trade, and the college prep kids continue on for 2 more years.

People will take this the wrong way but we spend millions on severe mentally handicapped students who have a very small margin of ability to learn .

NCLB started all this. Districts get funding based on attendance and number of kids in the building. So kids that previously would be expelled or suspended are now in In School Suspension (Still riding the bus and around other kids before and after school) or alternative school settings where they just sit on a computer all day for 45 days then end up back at the school.

Just like in society, if kids are problems every year, multiple times a year, at some point the school should be able to remove the child for the betterment of the rest of the school. But as the system stands, those kids get all the attention of admin and disrupt classes that it is a huge net negatives on learning.

its the same dumb people who think financial math isnt taught in school, that basic computer skills are not taught, basic health is not taught......

its such a lazy take that they scream...need more trades...when its been implemented for decades that you could go that path.

kids choose not to go that route and but also not the college route either and they do it due to poor parenting.

the OP is right though, the class disruptors should not be in school after freshman year, sorry. choose a path or get out.

all goes back to parental involvement though.

I’d be surprised if 90% of Louisiana public school students gave a shite about being in school. That’s very optimistic.

Yeah, I don’t know what that’s about. I’ve been a social studies teacher in Louisiana public schools for 28 years, and I make right at $60k

90% is extremely optimistic at “the best” normal public high school school in Louisiana

As with all things, getting the gov't out of the public education business would be step one. Parents should handle this themselves without the intrusion of the state.

should be a mandatory requirement to get a government support check of any kind

you cant get a job other than flipping burgers if you dont have a HS diploma. if you want to suck the government teet you should bre required to have minimum requirements employers ask

I don't see why a free country would require any parent to send their children to school against their will.

Should a parent? Yes
Should the government make a parent? No
