That’s called a “to-day notice”, not to confused with a “two day notice”.

I had a guy give his two week notice and then start calling sick. When he resigned we began monitoring all of his digital activity and email. Because of this we could see he was lying since he booked travel plans with his new employer to house hunt using his work email with us. He was using the sick days so he could still collect money on unused vacation days.

When he returned for his last week of work to wrap things up I had his access shutdown and told him it was his last day. Also the sick days he tried to use were now vacation days. He lost the vacation days and an additional week of paid work. He was furious and tried to deny everything even though we had copies of the whole house hunting trip, including the paper work for the new home. I’ll never understand why he used his work email for all of this.

No one has to give two weeks notice and a company doesn’t have to honor two weeks notice. If you don’t plan to follow through on your two week notice just be an adult and resign immediately.

Best bet is to offer a 2 week notice. Don’t burn any bridges as you leave. Many companies now won’t accept it end employment that day.

Also if you are worth it they may counter your offer. But if you quit the same day that won’t happen.

I had a guy that was so bad, company wouldn’t let me release him. When he came in for his 2 weeks notice, I sent him home with 2 weeks pay.

Unless you're a naive idiot, you should have zero loyalty to your employer.

You are nothing to them other than a way to make them money and they dont give a frick about you personally.

You dont owe anyone shite.

Would they give you notice before you were fired?

frick them and do whats best for you.

I watched some guy give two weeks a few months back and they booted him the same day due to network security concerns.

I remember this happening to folks 15-20 years ago with certain companies. Not most of where I worked. I always gave two weeks' notice. Though once it was on my way out for vacation , that time I figured they would boot me. I do always offer to answer any question or help my replacement if I can after I leave.

I’ve given over a month the last two times I’ve given notice.

Realistically, you should already have the other job, so if they let you go, then great…you have a vacation. If they accept your notice, then you get paid for not doing much over the time period and you haven’t burned a bridge.

this was the norm at the last two places I worked. I had been at one five years and one a year. Both of those companies let me work out the two weeks. I appreciate that they trusted me but I would have preferred a vacation.

Be courteous enough to offer 2 weeks but be prepared to leave that day

I have seen plenty of people do quality exits. We’re a tight industry and profession and most care about their reputation.

Worked for a company many years ago with a supervisor who loved the "My way or the highway" line and always finished his tough talk with "If you don't like it there's the door".

Had another job lined, waited for his next meeting, then I got up walked out when he said that crap. Never looked nor said a single word on my way out. Felt great.

It's not that simple. I'm already on extended leave for having a child. I just wouldn't return

Depends on how much I like the old job and how badly I need a reference from them. At this stage in my life, I only take jobs I'm going to like so I'd probably work out a notice just out of courtesy to my coworkers.

It says in our certification guidelines something to the effect of "Out of respect for your employer and patients blah blah blah you should give enough time for the employer to hire and train your replacement" It is not required by any means, it is just a "guideline". That is not exactly what it says, but that is basically it.

Anyway, if my employer wants to fire me I will be gone that day, they won't give me weeks to line up another job so I don't miss a check. If I give notice it is not like they are going to find a replacement, not even someone on contract. Jobs are plentiful and there just are not a lot of people graduating that are qualified.

I was leaving a job but I had a business trip planned I really wanted to go on…I gave my two weeks the day I returned…my idiotic boss was not fooled…
I was ready if he let me go that day but he needed me to pass on all my projects to do that…

Like the poster earlier said give two weeks but be prepared to get let go that day.

I gave 6 months notice the last job I left.

But it’s very hard for companies to hire in my line of work.

I earned much more respect that way and it has benefitted me in many unexpected ways for years.
