My old roommate had an electric smoker, while the ability to set a temperature was nice the hopper where you loaded pellets was way too small and it only lasted about an hour before needing more. I believe it was a Smokey Mountain smoker. The results were good but doing something like a brisket was impractical because you couldn't put it on at night and check on it once, you had to constantly add pellets.

This is exactly why the amazen pellet tray was developed. I've gotten ten hours of smoke from one tray, others have reported going past 12.

I'd never use an electric without it for the very reason you mentioned.

Curious what you are smoking that benefits from that much smoke.

For those that have electric smokers, do you find that the meats you smoke have an adequate amount of smoke flavor? I have a Bradley smoker, and the meats do not have as much of a smoke flavor as I would like. I'm considering buying a Weber Smokey Mountain.

ie smoked excellent stuff with my Primo. and it does more than smoking. But you are gonna pay cause the OB deal is dead. RIP

I am looking at reviving a deal...might not be as much off as the original but it will be more than you can get else ware (looking like around 30% off primo). I looked at Kamado Joe as well. I'll post more when i have all the info.

Yes, I only smoke my butts til they reach 160 (about 4-6 hours) then I wrap. They have plenty of smoke flavor, you can go longer if you want with the pellet tray easily, but you'll over do it most likely.

I know a lot of people like Masterbuilt electrics....but I've had 2 in 4 years fail. I'm done with them...and I keep mine in the garage..not exposed to the elements.

If you want charcoal fueled smoking, this is an easy way to go. I have owned mine for 11 years and it basically set and forget, once you get the vents dialed in. I own a DigiQ, too, that I use occasionally for overnight smokes and it has been true to temp for 16 hour runs on 1 load of charcoal. The Virtual Weber Bullet Forum is a great tool for mastering the WSM.

Yeah I guess that tray would work in the one we used, I can't remember what the burner area looked like in that thing. It just had this small cylinder you pulled out, put pellets in, inserted it, and twisted to dump them into the burner. The cylinder was maybe 4"x 1" and that might be too big.

The pellet tray will work in just about anything as long as it get adequate air flow, you have the space for it, it's not to close to the heat source where it will ignite the second or third row early, and it's not where drippings will put it out.

Sounds like a lot of requirements, but it's really not.

I did do a mailbox mod(a popular mod) to my MES to make sure I never had any of those issues and it allows me to cold smoke cheese's and such.

The pellet tray sits in the mailbox. Air flows in through holes in the front of the mail box, then carries the smoke from the mailbox up into the smoker and out the top.

Plenty of people use the tray without this mod, but this design is kind of the foolproof guarantee no issues mod. Works like a charm.

IMO nothing ever comes close to real wood smoke. Just can't pack that into a pellet.

Pellets are made from real wood.

They are, they just don't taste nearly as good as some split wood to me.

That's a pretty sweet looking setup. I don't think my friend uses his smoker anymore, might have to see if he'll give it to me and let me play with it.
