BGE and similar with temperature control are basically the sous vide of smoking.
No doubt they put out a good product, but there is no art. No connection with the grill.

Do you want to set and forget? = Go with electric or propane cabinet type smoker
Do you want charcoal and lower cost? = Go with Weber Smoky Mountain (WSM), Brinkman, Pit barrel type or low end offset
Charcoal and higher cost? = Ceramic cookers, Larger Offset, Yoder, etc.

My green mountain grills pellet smoker is great. Lazy man’s smoker.

If "connection with the grill" = constantly fiddling with the vents to maintain temperature, then you can keep it.
I smoke brisket and pork to have tasty smoked meat, not masturbate with my bbq pit

It would be cheaper to go buy it or use a oven with liquid smoke.

This was a pretty popular model. I’m not sure if it’s still available.

There's usually a group of them outside of office buildings several times a day
But don't look near any government housing areas. They aren't there anymore AND they ain't happy about it!

Do you want to tend it or make it go easy?

I have a 40” electric Masterbuilt with a wood chip auto loader. I love it.

This. I have an electric smoker and I can just set the temp, load chips every few hours and it's done.
Get digital. And for ease, an auto pellet smoker. Electric and propone smokers are also perfect for keeping consistent temps, which is a big factor in smoking. My smoker is well seasoned, and smells amazing just turning it on.
Brisket takes forever to smoke properly.

I also love my master built electric with amazenpellet smoker.
Start it, and don't have to touch it until I wrap the meat.

It really depends on how much work you want to put into it, how hung up on fuel type you are, and how much you want to pay.
I can speak to three smokers that I have experience with and their pros and cons:
I have a Char Griller offset that I also use as my primary grill. Smoking with an offset smoker requires more work to maintain temps and flame, BUT it's smoking at it's basic form and gives you a good excuse to spend the day out on the porch drinking. I also, enjoy the challenge, personally.
I used to have a Masterbuilt Electric Smoker; it was great when I wanted to smoke something but didn't want to put a ton of time into it. The nice thing about the electric smoker, is you set the temp and go; from that point all you do is refresh wood chips about once an hour or so. Still cooks with great flavor, but maybe not quite as deep of smoke.
The smoker I most use, is a Smoke Vault gas smoker. I love this smoker because it gives me a fairly constant temp and I can also get a fairly good smoke on my meat. The Smoke Vault works best with wood chunks vs. chips, so you have to keep a little more eye on the temps, but honestly it gives me my best smoke for the money.
I have yet to part with the money for a pellet smoker because I'm cheap and what I have works great, but I've hear great things about them.

We'll, I'd argue that when you smoke brisket or pork, it's the same as saying I made pizza but all that I really did was call Domino's. You say you smoked something, but you really didn't do shite.
