So I saw a post earlier this year on TD about Walmart having MES smokers on clearance. Went and picked one up. Ended up getting an amaze-n-pellet tray and doing a mailbox mod to the smoker. I was ridiculed on here by some when I asked about the mailbox mod, but I don't care... So glad I did it.

Works great, I can start it and it'll smoke for 10 hours without me messing with it. Only downside would be trying to hold temp in cold weather.

So far I've done 4 butts, 2 chickens, and some ribs. Everything has come out great.

Anyway, here's some pics.

Meat looks good, but that mailbox mod is a federal offense. Postal Code and whatnot.

How do you keep the door glass so clean? Mine is darn near black after one smoke.

AMNPS is the only way to smoke with the MES, some on here still won’t jump on that train much less the mailbox mod.

Airflow and getting the pellets away from the burner. Some people have a lot of trouble getting the airflow right in their MES to keep the pellets lit. Some others have problems with the burner causing the pellets to burn too fast. This solves both those issues by putting the pellets outside the MES.

Glad to see indoor smoking is making a comeback to the mainstream. In the 90s they went so far in the wrong direction with fire codes and safety regulations it forced just about everyone outside to the elements.

We didn't have fancy mailbox attachments back in the 90s tho. We had 2 big box fans and open windows. Added a mod once with a few feet of flexible AC coil but it restricted flow too much.

In the 90's? Hell in the 80's this mod is what we used to heat the house. Pellets ran much longer before needing to replaced.

The MES is kind of a nightmare for airflow. It drafts poorly and the vents do next to nothing. By moving the pellets to the mailbox it drafts better, and you can control the airflow to the pellets by opening or closing the door. A lot of people add a 90 degree elbow to the outflow vent to improve draft as well. Mailbox also takes the pellets out of the line of fire of the drippings which will put out the pellets in a heartbeat. Allows you to cold smoke better too. Other than looking kinda junky there's no reason to not do the mailbox mod.

I have that exact smoker and use the Amaze-n-tray also. Would like to get the specs on that mailbox mod. Does the smoke enter from the chip loader hole? Looks like you keep the top vent closed?

Why would you smoke meat inside of your house?

No, I don't keep the top vent closed, that was a piece of metal I was playing with to cover the heat element I ended up not using. I keep the top vent wide open.

Basically you strip out all the stuff at the bottom except the heat element. Wood chips loader, chip pan, etc. It's pretty easy.

I did have to open a panel on the back to get to a screw to loosen a bracket holding the cover that sits over the wood chips I believe.

Then just get a three inch metal ducting elbow, pipe, mailbox, and vent tape. The hole for the chip loader is exactly the right size to slide the pipe in.

The hardest part was cutting the hole in the mailbox for the pipe. I drew a circle, then made pie shaped traingles in the the circle and cut those with a drimmel and bent them into the mailbox to make flanges I could tape the pipe too.

You can do it several different ways. Like out the back where it's flat and easier, but I liked the look of this better.

Then cut some holes in the mailbox door for the air to flow through.

After that you just slide the pipe into the wood chip loader hole.

However you do it I would recommend making sure the mailbox sits below the smoker and the pipe is going upwards as much as possible, not sideways.

I also added some bolts to the bottom of the amaze-n-pellet tray to lift it up for better airflow.

I don't smoke inside my house. That was just a pic I took before taking it out on the deck, lol.

Why can't you just wrap the mailbox in some fireproof insulation? Seems like it would be pretty easy.

My first smoke was in February. It was cold and still did ok, but you could tell it was struggling to keep temp to 230.

If I lived in a colder climate up north I would consider doing something different, but it's really not that big of a deal in the south.

Seems to be most of the heat comes from the heating element and the smoke comes from the mailbox but I am kinda confused by the set up
