I'm a Cancer, I'm not sure what attributes that should give me but just in case, GFY...or I completely understand.

Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, etc. are figurative training wheels for atheism.

I hate the elf and refuse to participate in that. I'm having to buy yet another thing and create these elaborate situations for the elf every night really represents things I hate about society now. Yiu can't write a book one day and start pretending like this is a tradition. But, Santa is time honored, and I think it does teach kids about joy and giving and the Christmas spirit. I always feel sad for kids who aren't allowed to believe. It's a few years. They have a whole lifetime of reality.

We do a Star Wars themed Christmas. I have convinced the children that General Palpatine comes to visit little children who have shown a strong presence of the dark force once a year. He leaves hard boiled eggs in the kitchen for their breakfast because, of course, hard boiled eggs help you grow into a strong sith warrior!

You know what? Life sucks. It’s tough and not fun and full of stress and misery.
Kids get precious little amounts of true innocence. Let them enjoy the magic of Santa. Don’t rob them of that.

This person is thinking way too deeply about Santa Claus.
The author of the article is almost certainly a Bernie Sanders supporter, and is making sure her children are raised the collective not the individual is what is truly important, that contributing to the greater good is more important than what they want as an individual.

My kids love the elf. I didn't plan it, but I like it too because it makes them excited. We also raise them to behave out of respect. We're nuanced and can multitask and crazy shite like that.
OP author sounds insecure and is probably a shitty parent. Not pecker, I know he's not a parent, even though he'd definitely be a terrible one too.

Agreed.
I actually share their position on Santa, but they come off as judgmental a-holes.
I say if Santa or elf-on-a-shelf works in your family, that’s wonderful and I’m glad everyone is happy. It doesn’t for us. To each his own.

There are a lot of places really going after the elf this year. Seen a few academic sources and click bait editorials just hammering the little bastard.
Personally I’d like to see the fad die off, it really shows off the #metoo generation.

The fad of having the elf, or the fad of bashing the elf?

They’ll figure it out by 3rd grade. Just enjoy it. Try to teach them Christmas is more about helping others than getting presents (tough for a 5 year old). Then let them ask a million questions about Jesus.
