That's just transference of a Christian feast day (celebrated in Alexandria starting in 200 AD and Constantinople in 380 AD). The festival Natalis Invicti did not hand or presents or anything like that, but was a big day, so naturally Christians moved a newer feast day celebration (Christs birth) which was being celebrated on all sorts of different days, to one day.
Also, the cult of Sol Invictus and Mithras often took early Christian practices and made them their own, trying to co-opt Christianity. But your liberal websites don't tell you that. They just say it was Christianity. But in reality, they were fighting for survival, and they were relatively new pagan cults.

Believing in Santa made for some great times as a child, I wouldn’t rob those memories from my kid just because I want credit for the gifts.

granted the entire point of the article is that she now feels terrible for having these thoughts, but my god. She seems like a real pleasant person.

What this really comes down to is that this woman wants to take the wonder abd magic of Christmas from her kids so that she can be satisfied that her kids know that she bought the presents.
It's actually really selfish of her. She needs the gratification of her kids knowing that she spent a lot of money so she sacrifices a great part of their childhood.
