I wish Santa would come back into my house.

The 6 year old just ain't buying it. Damn near rolls his eyes at us every time we mention Santa. Mumbles "not real" and walks away.

It's kind of sad, actually. Thought it was supposed to last longer than that.

Nice line of reasoning. Also make sure they read no Harry Potter or watch any Star Wars. For that matter, eliminate ALL fairy tales from their youth...Indeed, ALL fiction, cause you know, it's not real.

1984 out
War and Peace. Out
To Kill a Mockingbird out.

Nice line of reasoning. Because children who read Harry Potter, watch Star Wars, and read the Cat and the Hat are encouraged to believe that Harry Potter is a real sorcerer that performs magic at Hogwarts, Darth Vader is a real Sith Lord, and that cats talk and wear striped hats.

My son believes in tons of stuff that isn't real. He has an imagination. He's 3. I'm not concerned he'll lead some terrible life because he believes in Santa for a few years. He is getting a kick out of Christmas this year and it's certainly not something I'm going to take away from him because I for some reason think I'm better than playing pretend with my kid for a few years

The old lady and I were cracking up last night as we wrapped our son’s presents... can’t wait to see his face when he opens them... we also have a three year old.. Christmas will be a blast this year with him...

Hmmm what a great mom.

She won't let the children enjoy Santa Claus or the stupid Elf because they aren't real...

But she forces her religion, which isn't real, upon those same children?

Yeah that is awesome

Right?

An ex girlfriend's son stopped believing. I tried to postpone with the gift out of nowhere. Insisted it was his mom that got it for him when I egged it on.

I was at a holiday party the other night when a friend sighed and declared, “Gotta go home and move the elf.”

I couldn’t help but shake my head a little and sigh to myself, admittedly with an air of righteousness, knowing we’d never say that in my home. My husband didn’t understand the reference, so I explained to him what “Elf on a Shelf” was, to the best of my knowledge.

“So, basically they use scare tactics and bribery to get their kids to behave?” he paraphrased. And I nodded, again with a slight air of disbelief.

quote:
Meanwhile, in our home, my husband and I work very hard to encourage our kids simply to be good for – to quote a popular Christmas song – goodness’ sake. The notion of encouraging my kids to be good in order to make Santa’s “nice” list really troubles me. Not only does it completely undermine my authority, but it’s pure extrinsic motivation.

quote:
But how kids think of Santa Claus represents, for me, all that is not Christmas spirited: receiving instead of giving, greed instead of gratefulness, idle wanting instead of active contributing. And encouraging my children to write letters to him or make Christmas lists or be good because he’s watching encourages all the wrong things for me. I want whatever goodness does come out of my children to be for the right reasons. I want them to be people who are simply good and kind and honest, as I try to be (well, most of the time:).

quote:
This year, now that my daughter is of an age where she could truly believe in Santa and be consumed by the magic and thrill of believing, I wasn’t willing to let him come down our chimney.

My friend with the ever-watching elf thinks I am cruel. She thinks it’s truly sad that I have robbed my children of the magic of the holiday. But I don’t see it. My kids still enjoy reading about Santa – as much as they enjoy reading about Harold and his purple crayon or The Cat in the Hat, magical characters who are not actually real but still capture a child’s imagination. My kids will still wake up on Christmas morning to see a sparkling tree with a modest bounty of presents underneath.

The lights will still twinkle and the decorations still shine. No one needs to sit on a shelf or a keep a list for us. The day will be special simply because it’s Christmas – even if Santa skips our house.

OK. I just hope this a-hole doesn't tell his/her kids to believe in Jesus

Things are getting serious with my gf, and we've been talking about stuff like that.

We've come to the conclusion that as Christians we will abstain from Santa as real, and just promote him as a fun fairytale that's not true (helping to keep some of the "magic", while also not lying). In her home region of Alsace France, they have a few other Christmas characters like Hans Trapp the slapper who slaps kids. All the kids know he's not real, but they love to play along.

1) what fun do they miss out on?
2) how is this a sign of laziness on the part of the parents?
3) the parents are the ones buying the gifts, why shouldn't the children be thankful to the parents for the gifts
4) how is this a sign of rebelling? Did you read the article?

I think the point is that it's fine if you choose tom deprive your children of one of the happiest and most magical times of their lives. Int he end it will likely have no real effect on them.

But, to criticize people who do let their kids believe is just being a dick for the sake of being a dick.

Why does Christmas have to be about Santa? Why can't it be about something more substantive?

Because most small children haven't developed enough yet to understand anything "more substantive".

And besides, the world at large is a pretty shitty place, so its kind of nice seeing kids still believing in someithg magical while they are young.

How is it that the tradition isn't that the presents are from Jesus Christ? Wouldn't that make more sense, seeing as it is a Christian holiday, than does the presents having come from some secular Santa?

Because Christmas really isnt a "Christian" holiday. It was a pagan celebration co-opted by early Christians in order to convert said Pagans.

Truth be told, the birth of Jesus (if it ever happened at all) was sometime in the Spring-tax season remember.

Read up on your history, baw. Specifically the quests for the historical Jesus.

From Wikipedia, but plenty of info out there:

quote:

there is a general scholarly consensus on the basic outline of Jesus' life in that most scholars agree that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, debated Jewish authorities on the subject of God, performed some healings, taught in parables, gathered followers and was crucified by Roman prefect Pontius Pilate

Note, this doesn't speak to the divinity, but just that he was a real man, not myth.

Whatever, the point I was making was that he wasn't born on 12/25.

That was completely made up to bastardize and overtake a pagan celebration.

I still celebrate the feast of Saturn. On Saturn's Day, that's Saturday for you Huns.
