These people sound like the Griswold’s neighbors in Christmas Vacation. I can almost guarantee that the kids of parents like these will go overboard with Santa stuff with their own kids.

My younger kid thinks he has it figured out and has said that he knows there’s no Santa. I told him that when he stops believing, he stops receiving. That shut him down pretty quickly.

The kids like Santa and the Elf. When they get old enough to figure it out, they appreciate the time and effort that their parents put into making Christmas a little more special.

So do I. I didn't believe in Santa. Neither did my sister.

Well the Elf thing is just a recent retarded marketing thing

as for Santa, I don't know

She knows who Santa is, she believes in him, we just don't "do" Santa, like the whole cookie and milk thing and she knows the presents are from us

This is lame

Pecker do you have kids?

FWIW, i think elf on the shelf is retarded.. as is most of the fads that are popular on social media... serious question: was elf on the shelf a thing before Facebook?

I'll never do elf on a shelf because I think it's social conditioning to big brother,
My kids don't think it's watching them. They just like to see what it got into overnight.

always a good time

The fact that you think santa is the "magic of Christmas" is precisely the problem

What problem is that? That I enjoy seeing my kids faces light up on Christmas morning, or at their faces light up at the Greatest Story Ever Told (The Birth of Jesus).

At the end of the day, what possible good comes from telling a child there is no Santa Claus?

In fact Santa led me to question religion and give up on it.

There is a not-small contingent of atheists who do Santa with their children specifically for this reason, it is one of the first steps American children take towards skeptical inquiry and teaches them not to always trust authority or tradition.

Why does Christmas have to be about Santa? Why can't it be about something more substantive?
It can be about multiple things, including Santa.

Rebelling against "bourgeois" social norms in order for the parents to feel superior. Then inventing all manner of rationalizations about how it's not about that, like in your story.

Much like many other things, I have no problem with people who don't celebrate Santa in their homes.

I do however have a problem when these people feel the need to tell other families how wrong they are for lying to their children or tell other people's children that santa isn't real.

Symptom of what? Wanting your children to believe in things that are real?

To be fair, the majority of your audience here wastes time believing in God. Can't hold it against them if they want to add another imaginary figure to help with their parenting.

Just curious, but to you or others here, do you feel the need to make Christmas a consumerism competition?

I don't make it a competition at all... at the end of the day I like see my kids happy.
