This is just a proxy war between Russia and the United States. There is more tension between us than most people realize. I could see a major war in the next decade

It is heartbreaking.
But the West is never going to be able to influence Muslims to treat each other like humans, or act like humans.

Perhaps it was a bad idea for Obama/Hillary to support the Assad overthrow
It's certainly turned out that way. They assumed that Assad would fall quickly but it just ramped up the violence and number of refugees. Russia and Iran don't want to see Assad fall and have been propping him up. And meanwhile there are groups fighting Assad who also happily fight each other given the chance. We poured gasoline on this fire and now have no idea how to put it out. Unintended consequences are a bitch.

If the political elite in the US weren't bought and paid for by Arab sheiks that want a pipeline to sell natural gas and oil to the EU, there wouldn't be a civil war in Syria right now.

This is a failure of every world leader over the past 15 years. Bush, Obama, Putin, Blair, Cameron, Merkel, Ban Ki-moon, etc. It should have never gotten to this point.
Honest question because I'm not big into the politics of it all but what could they have done differently?
It seems like if we do nothing this happens and if we try to intervene it happens. So what are we supposed to do?

Even after the war ends, it will be decades after the end before Syria has anything resembling stability.
I've always wondered if a partitioning of Syria and Iraq is the real solution. Essentially a Kurd/Sunni/Shia split between the two current states.
Here's the thing. Before Obama started funding these rebel groups, Syria was stable. Yes, Assad is a dictator and repressive to minorities within his borders. And we should, using the proper UN channels, put pressure on Assad to stop repressing his people. But the absolute worst solution to the problem is to totally destabilize the whole country.
There was no mess in Syria until Obama made one.

I'm not here to defend Obama at all. His Middle East/North Africa foreign policy has been embarrassing. US foreign policy in the ME/NA has been embarrassing for a long time.
Look forward, it is hard to imagine Syria existing as a state the way they did pre-war. Same with Iraq.

And what was that worthless, big-eared idiot doing while that child was being dug out of the rubble of his own home? Well...

Civil war is the worst type of war there is. I don't understand the need to constantly find someone to blame for every problem in the world.
When Bush was president, everyone blamed everything on him. Now that Obama is in office, he gets blamed for everything. I think some of you don't fully understand what a president is capable/not capable to do. If the US intervenes with a situation going on in another country people will be yelling about how we should be concerned about our own country first, etc, etc. When something goes wrong then everyone wants to know "why didn't the US do anything about it."
ISIS took advantage of how vulnerable Syria was/is an added a new element to the whole situation. Hopefully I am wrong, but there will never be peace in that part of the world.

This conflict is tailored made for UN intervention and peacekeeping; however, it is such a toothless organization that has failed spectacularly.
Kinda makes you wonder why we funnel billions into supporting them. At this point it is clear they are just a international country club for do nothing diplomats.

It's fine to over analyze our role in international conflicts, the potential and realized blowback from interventions or the lack there of, etc.
But I agree otherwise. Part of advancing as a society has resulted in us seeking "answers" for every ill that occurs. Whether it's a mass shooting, or an election result, or a natural disaster, or a civil war on another continent. To some extent it is productive and I'm not advocating for blind ignorance of such things. But the need to attribute responsibility and blame, I believe, is rooted in the emotional response to uncertainty and the desire to project order onto chaos. And it's exhausting.

It's beyond embarrassing, It's been an unmitigated disaster.
Obama has destabilized the whole region.
Obama started a civil war that's killed half a million and created the biggest refugee crisis seen since WWII.
Obama stuck a deal that gives Iran billions to further their terrorist activities and still be able to get the bomb.
Obama's withdrawal from Iraq created chaos there and in Syria and directly lead to the rise of ISIS
Seriously, looks around the Middle East and all you will see is one Obama failure after another.

quote:I tend to agree with this, but what was the goal in de-stabilizing Syria? Was it the pipeline to end Russia's stranglehold on Europe (nat gas) while allowing Saudi, Qatar and Turkey to monopolize the European gas mkt (which would also weaken Russia economically) To create/strengthen a boogy man (ISIS) in order to infringe upon the rights of Americans (I think it's bigger than this)? Convert Europe to Islam? FUBAR situation.
No, this is specifically a failure of Obama as POTUS and Clinton and SoS. Obama is the one who working with Turkey and Saudi Arabia poured mountains of money and arms to the Syrian Rebels. Without US backing, there would be no rebellion in Syria. Obama wanted Assad toppled and the result is a civil war that's already killed half a million.
