The juxtaposition of the Wright Flyer and the 787 has some other relevance here. The Wrights flew in 1903 and in 1953 the airlines of the world carried 50 million commercial passengers. The concept that it will take 50 more years for commercial trucking to be primarily autonomous (barring a societal meltdown) is quite silly.

So people are going to voluntarily ride on these rigs free of charge? Because the sole driving force behind this technology is eliminating costs associated with human labor during delivery

What if you have a monitor off site 24 hours? You then can run 24 hours a day, even that would be a huge advancement, and even still if there is just a monitor now you don't think in 50 years that will be eliminated?
Or you don't want them to be for some reason so you are denying an inevitability?
