You realize that priest/rabbi/ministers are religiously marrying people first, and legally marrying them as a perk, right?
Correct. OP asked if there was a point if you're not Christian....as though there was a point as a Christian, but possibly not if you aren't. I was just asking what's the point if you're Christian. There's different points based on Christianity and for legal benefits. It started as a religious thing and developed into more, but neither play a significant role in the basis for marriage of most people anymore.

As far as I’m concerned religion and government shouldn’t have anything to do with marriage. I know it’s not that easy in today’s world, money being the #1 reason. That’s just the way I feel.

Hindus, and most Muslims tend to mate for life, too.
Both religions allow polygamy, so there’s that difference.

Marriage is about man and woman creating life. That is the most important aspect for every country in the world.

I guess there are some tax benefits, but other than that what do men gain from marriage other than the moderate possibility of extreme financial pain 10, 20, or 30 years in? Not discounting the importance of having a strong woman in your life, but does the actual marriage make sense?
Children brought into life by a married couple are statistically better off and have much better outcomes than those born into cohabitating or seriously dating households. Significantly better and this is even with all other factors like income or wealth accounted for.

Insert Obligatory, “we are talking about guys getting married”, “lack of sex once married” comment here.

There’s not much upside in dual incomes getting married anymore. It’s an automatic loss in tons of total monetary benefits!

I'm not sure what happened.
Industrialization and especially the rise of the information economy decoupled manual labor/physical strength from earning potential.

80% of divorces are initiated by the wife. 90% if she is educated. Imagine you work your arse off, provide, buy a nice house, start a family. One day, wifey decides she's not happy anymore, and files for divorce. Half of your shite is now gone, and you get to see the kids, if you are lucky, for 48 hours, every two weeks.
I'm 53 years old, and I can see why a dude these days wouldn't consider marriage. There is nothing but extreme risk and no real upside.

Marriage provides a strong framework to raise children. A loosely arranged cohabitation agreement will lead to insecure environment for children.

Most of our morals tie back into Christianity. If one decides to live without religion I'd assume one can rationalize doing about anything. Considering where we were at the turn of the century and where we are now I'd be unsurprised if in another ten years about anything goes. Hell, marry as many women as you want, concurrently.

Most of our morals tie back into Christianity.
The root of the problem is, most, even church going people, do not follow the Bible. They may go to church whenever the doors are open, but they pick and choose what the Bible teaches.

I always find the threads on here when people bitch about not getting any action from their wife funny/sad. I don’t care if you’re 16 or 46, it’s still the same if people actually care about each other. If a couple that’s been married 20 years are only having sex once a month, like it’s scheduled, something’s wrong.

Love and spending time with your best friend, building a life together. Some marriages are fun and the spouses actually are in love.

Fact, marriage didn't start until Christianity came around.
If you're being a smartass, my apologies I didn't catch it. Having said that, you do know the entire Old testament, Greek Mythology, and a great history of egyptian pharoahs all occurred before the advent of Christianity Right?

How do gays getting married have any impact on anyone’s life whatsoever outside of taxes? Like what’s an example of a societal problem caused by gays marrying?
When we allow gay “marriage” it redefines what marriage actually is. Like I said marriage is geared toward producing children and starting families to grow society in the best way possible. Gays can’t reproduce. What then happens is gay couples doing IVF or surrogacy for children. This produces children outside of the marital union and the sexual act. Then we have kids that never know their parents, and especially fathers. Fathers, biological fathers, are a huge part of who a child is. Every child deserves to come into this world to loving biological parents, mother and father, who will love and take care of them.
