Food is ready when they said it would be, and is correct?
Sure, I'm tipping 10-15%.
Granted, I'm more fortunate financially than most, so I can afford to do so.

If I'm not being waited on, $5 is the max I'll give.

I agree the tipping factor has gotten out of hand. However, post covid, the food & beverage industry has never recovered. Will your tipping 20% on the order be a financial pinch? Odds are if you receive a smile, two ounces of 'give a damn'. and a thank you, in my book they've earned it. As another poster said, the packaging of the takeout food, placing napkins, utensils, etc., is more involved than you would believe. Count your blessings and pass it on (especially if you are a frequent customer).

Of all the things I wouldn't order to go it's definitely steak and potato
Who the hell orders that to go?

Wait. What? So to go orders.. The food is cooked/prepared then it goes to the person who prepares it to be picked up right? I assume they just check the order to make sure it matches what was ordered then they put it in a bag to be made ready for pick up right? They might have to put in whatever comes with orders.. Utensils, etc..
Waiting a table. Customers sit down at table and waiter does the introduction visit, takes drink orders. Goes back with drink orders and ask if everyone is ready to order. If so, they take everyone's order. Usually while they wait on their order, go check to see if they need refills and just let them know their food will be ready soon. Once food is ready it is delivered to the table and once everyone has their order, the waiter gets customers anything else they need. Maybe check one more time to see if they need anything else. If they want dessert then do that process. Bring them their bill, do the transactions, bring back receipts.
How does take out orders require more work?

No kidding. It's one of the worst things to order to go. Either dine in or make the shite yourself. This is stupid.

Grocery cashiers do the same thing when they bag the goods, which they usually do. I've never seen anyone tip them. I do try to tip a bag boy if he helps me load the car, though many groceries don't allow tipping for that. Come to think of it, I haven't seen a bag boy in any stores around here in a very long time. Maybe they're only employed during peaks like Thanksgiving or Christmas.
As for folks at a drive-thru, I'll tip a dollar or two if they're friendly. If they're robotic, nope.

Probably not used to getting tipped at the sizzler.

Depends on how much the steak cost….
If it was a hundred dollar steak, then you under-tipped. If $30, I think that was just about right.

In Italy they what’s called “coperto” which you only pay if you’re being waited on. If you walk up to a cafe or pastry shop and order something no tip is ever asked for and they don’t flip around a damn screen. Generally, the coperto is around 2 euros (per person) every single time. Wish we’d get on board with this in the US.

That’s fine. Stop worrying about what they do.

Nothing wrong with that amount

No no NO!!
It’s 15%. 20% is for excellent service.
How the industry got everyone to think it’s 20% is amazing.

No but that 20% plus just a couple extra bucks for gas plus a just a little increase in groceries plus just a 1% increase in electricity, etc, etc fricking adds up.
And I’m fundamentally opposed to fricking hamburger costing $25

Sounds right. I make it a point to tip at Subway. Mainly because I have gotten to know the ladies that work there and they are a good bunch of people that work hard and don't get paid a lot and have no benefits. But im not speaking of a lot of money for two people at subway and a 20% tip.

I don’t tip for takeout orders that I’m picking up. They can give whatever look they want.

They don’t let you do take out at nice steakhouses.
