Sure, I'm tipping 10-15%.
Wait, you're tipping because the food is what you ordered and it's ready? Isn't that like the bare minimum standard of what a restaurant does? What are we doing here?

Yes I do. I recognize that I tip more often and at a higher rate than most people.

If I'm at an airport bathroom, and I see a worker in there, I'm giving them a $5 or a $10. If I'm going to be at a bar for awhile, I'm tipping the bartender $10 before I order my first drink. Likewise, I'll tip the charter fishing captain $100 the moment I get on the boat. The smiles on their faces are worth more to me than the money, and of course they'll take care of me which is nice.

So you're just giving money away, it has nothing to do with a service provided. Good for you. Don't hurt you shoulder patting yourself on the back, though.

How so?

Rule of thumb - If I haven't tasted the food yet, you aint getting tipped.

I worked the to-go counter at the campus Chimes for a year in the early 2000's. Answering phone orders, walk-up orders, selling Varsity tickets/merch, etc. Tips were never expected, especially since I was getting paid minimum wage versus the servers who got $2.15/hour. (granted, they made great money, as I learned when I started waiting tables there).

While definitely not expected, it was nice when an extra dollar or two was thrown my way. I did run to the back, check on the correctness of the order, bag the food, with the proper condiments & utensils and haul my way back to the FOH to answer the always ringing phone.

Game days were insane - in a good way

TIP means "To Ensure Promptness" and that is why excellent in person service gets a bigger tip than carry out or crappy service.

It’s 15%. 20% is for excellent service.

How the industry got everyone to think it’s 20% is amazing.

Yeah what the frick are yall doing tipping 20% for absolutely nothing?

I tip 10% when the service is the lazy simple shite like bring me my order that I made at the register and refill my drink.

15% for a regular restaurant that takes my order and does a decent job.

20% or more is for a waiter/waitress who improved the overall dining experience somehow. Maybe they gave great suggestions, were really nice, or they got us a good table, etc.

Let's assume it's $100 for my steak, drink and side. I'll tip $20 on that $25 if service was great.

Tip for pick up? Never.

I'm paying for the product. If anything, pick ups should get a small discount for keeping a table freed up. Not to mention you would charge me a delivery fee.

I was prompted to tip for handling me a code to go get my range balls out of a machine yesterday. I declined. It’s almost insulting

Of course it has to do with a service provided. I'm not randomly giving money to the other customers at the restaurant.

I just tip more, and more often, than most people. Not trying to say that you should as well. But it works for me.

What kind of idiot tips for a pick up order?
What kind of idiot pays for a "nice" steak that they're bringing home to eat 20 minutes after it finishes resting?
