re: If you get pulled over, do you answer seemingly innocuous questions?

I live on a dead end street off a state highway, couple of years ago a parish deputy followed me after I made the turn and pulled me over because I had a tail light out, unbeknownst to me. Fine
But then I start getting the “where are you going?, where have you been tonight?, who is that in the car with you? Is that your wife” questions and I politely told him none of that was any of his business and to please give me my ticket if he was going to do so.
he let me go. I’m middle aged, white, yes that was my wife and I could see my house from where we were stopped, and he could obviously see that I lived on that street from my drivers license.
there was no reason for the questions or for me to be under suspicion of anything other than a tail light bulb being bad
Curious, what if you had just rolled up and into your garage and shut the door behind you? They can’t break in for traffic offense. Then go to fridge and crack open a beer. Either don’t answer door or if do have your beer and swig it while there.
Anyone know what would happen? Especially if you didn’t answer door. No judge is going to give them a warrant for speeding.

You say that, and it’s legally correct in the abstract, but there are indeed plenty of ways to extend the stop while you fish for an excuse to search the car or people in it.
If you ask if you are free to leave, and they say no, while extending the stop needlessly beyond what the stop was for, that's blatantly against Rodriguez no matter how they "fish for an excuse".

Never answer, “Do you know why I pulled you over?” Or any other question of the like.

I just don’t see it. They got your tag and can match address. Judge likely will just say let it go. If they even asked. Not sure of laws in all states and its hypothetical.

One time I got pulled over doing 104 in a 55. I was driving like an a-hole an and unmarked got behind me. I was semi-trying to lose him and then he hit his lights. Yikes.
Cop: GIVE ME ONE GOOD REASON NOT TO BRING YOU TO JAIL RIGHT NOW!
Me: I can’t.
Cop: I got you over 100 five times. Give me your keys.
I’d rolled down my driver side but since we were on the interstate he came to the passenger side. He goes to his car with the keys. It starts raining again and I got both windows down. Rain in coming in. Road spray coming in. Sucked.
Left with tickets for speeding ticket reckless driving.
I was out of state got a bunch of letters in the mail from lawyers. Hired one for a few hundred bucks. The cop never showed up to court over the few times they rescheduled. I think he was out of his jurisdiction when he lit me up. Ultimately the reckless charge was dropped and the speeding got reduced to 9 over.

That would likely turn into a felony evasion charge.

Never trust the police. ACAB.

I've not been asked those questions or at least they didn't have the time to ask.
When he walks up to the car, my car window is already down and I have my DL and CCW cards together along with my insurance papers.
My first words are when he's looking at the cards, "I have to inform you that I have a concealed weapon on me."
More than once, the cop asks, "OK, where is your weapon?" and I will tell him what kind and where it is. "I have a 9mm in my belt on my left side."
One cop grinned and said, "OK, that's fine. You don't touch yours and I won't touch mine."
I've never gotten out of a ticket though.

Absolutely and without hesitation. They have a tough enough job to do. Just cooperate.

I’ve only been pulled over 3-4 times in my life but there was never a conversation. It was license, insurance..I caught you going so and so..he leaves and returns with the ticket and tells be safe.
If you have a polite conversation they usually come back with a warning instead of a ticket.

If I was legit speeding or whatever, I answer it. I fess up and apologize. Make up a reason while also taking accountability. This has gotten me many warnings. I would not do this for a an actual crime of course but we’re talking a traffic ticket and I’m hoping for a warning, not a court case. If I get the ticket then I’m paying it and moving on with life so I don’t care about preserving my rights. I’ve been pulled over more than most people and I’d say 75% of the time I just got a warning. I even nearly accidentally side swiped NOPD on Canal St. Black cop pulled me over, I apologized , he saw I hadn’t been drinking, and told me to just be careful.
My latest stop was coming back from getting takeout from Texas Roadhouse for the family. I knew he would smell the food so I told
Him my people are hungry and I’m trying to bring them dinner as fast as possible and I offered him a dinner roll. Just a warning for going 60 in a 40.

Just tell the cop you are a National and you're just traveling.

And at the inevitable hearing where that would be relevant (and it would only be relevant because they found drugs, guns, or a body in your car), it would be the officers word against yours and you would lose.
They’d articulate something reasonable and the judge would rule in their favor.

I was driving through Clayton County GA several years back, got pulled over for doing 53/45 or something. I'm White, the officers black female, started asking me questions.
These questions were coming, presumably because my address was 60 miles away, and they thought it might be drug related. I was really driving through there for work.
She asks me what I did to afford a nice car. I started getting irritated & told her something like "I went to school to do a job that paid well & I don't waste money on alcohol, tobacco, or terrible looking tattoos."
I guess she got it that I was talking about hers, started trying to lecture me about what she could do. I just sat there & looked straight ahead. Then he let me off with a warning explaining how generous she was to me.

I had one throw in in addition to that “do you know why I pulled you over?”.
I was thinking “if you don’t know, why should I tell you?”. But I kept it inside my head and took my warning ticket.

It’s a piece of cake to obtain bodycam footage these days, of course.
