I don’t deny that

Yeah I went back and read your original comment and guess I was confused. You said his image was inflated post death. And that's absolutely true.

Nirvana, the band was absolutely huge, and Cobain's image and they way he's held in such high regard grew after his death.

I'm just pointing to his musical ability as being highly overrated.

Absolutely. Oh how many songs would Croce have written if he was still alive!?

Many great answers in this thread, but speaking specifically of the artists that succumbed to substance abuse and mental issues, how good would their new work really be if they cleaned up their lives and got help?

Am I to believe that Hendrix, Morrisson, and Stanley would turn out such great music without tripping balls on acid and popping ludes? Waylon Jennings, Stevie Nicks, Ozzy? Real high on drugs when they played.

Andrew Wood and then we wouldn't have to suffer with Pearl Jam.

I came here to say Andrew Wood.

To me some hit or were near the apex of their careers before they died. Was Cobain going to get any bigger than he was at the time of death? Maybe….maybe not. I love Zeppelin but I don’t think they were going to be any bigger or influential than they were a few years before Bonham’s death. For me I look at the “what could have beens” instead of artists who had already been on top of the world. Andrew Wood and Mother Love Bone would’ve been otherworldly huge had he lived but he died and Nirvana, Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden came along and filled a void that would’ve been dominated by MLB.

Others that jumped to mind are Eddie Cochran and Jesse Belvin. Incredible talents with a short life. Who knows how Buddy Holly would’ve evolved as an artist but I tend to think he would’ve been relevant long after his death.

As a side note, I was at the very last Stevie Ray Vaughn concert. It was surreal hearing on the radio a few hours later that his helicopter crashed. I was at the last concert Jerry Garcia did before he died a month later. My dad was at one of the last Buddy Holly/Valens/Big Bopper Shows. I think the second to last one of those and my dad was at the last Otis Redding show. So we have a bit of history with seeing the last or one of the last shows of some artists.

Dude was the lead singer of one the most popular bands on the planet at the time. LP was easily selling out stadiums and headlining top tier festivals, unlike many bands that came around the early 2000’s Linkin Park did not fade away.

Also Chester was just a really good person and him the rest of the band started their own charity raising money for victims of disasters
