It's hard to answer these without knowing the lifestyle of the people asking them the question. Roanoke, VA is hard to beat in terms of cost of living vs. quality of living. I would go Roanoke over Savannah or Knoxville.

I've actually been really impressed with the Gulf Coast lately. I like Ocean Springs/Gulf Shores, so we might go there after I finish school.
It's the most affordable coastal real-estate in the U.S. and still southern/low key kinda people. Don't wanna be surrounded by New England or California douches (i've lived in both, so I can say that with confidence).
World class fishing, and they price out most of the culcha.

For most industries that isn't exactly a robust job market.

Germantown and Collierville in Tennessee outside Memphis are both very nice. We lived there for years before moving to Pittsburgh.
I'd move back in a heartbeat if I could.

True but I plan on travel nursing. Spending the summer months traveling and making $$ and chilling all winter on the GC in my boat.

I tried to like the MS coast. Hell I wanted to like it enough to buy a place there since it's a short drive but I just can't get into it.

I'm torn. The east Tennessee down toward Ashville area really calls my name.
Fairhope Alabama seems really nice from my few visits.
I want somewhat isolated or on water, but I need to be within an easy drive of nice bars and restaurants. I can't stand only having redneck bullshite places as being the only option.
If the retirement plans don't work out as well as I hoped, I guess Bay St. Louis or Ocean Springs may be the place.

Madison, MS for a doctor is heaven.
Great pay for healthcare and doesn't take a lot of money to live very nice. Its also about the only place in MS that the public schools are great, but St. Andrew's is one of the best private schools in the South.
Seriously. Like AncientTiger says, its a hidden gem.

Yes. Shortage of doctors in the area have really brought up the salaries. With the low COL, its amazing how well high earners can live.
If you want culture, Madison is not the place. But its a family friendly area with low arse taxes. Its a good wealth building community if you do it right.
