Basements are awesome and underrated.

Stays tempered year around. Great access to electrical and plumbing to the above floor.

The main reason the South doesn't have them isn't because of water table issue like many think. Its just a cost and a non-typical build issue.

Up north they have to get their foundation below the frost line ~4ft. If you go though that much effort you might as well do a bit more dirt and concrete work and have a basement. Every builder up there knows how to build a basement. Very few builders knows how to build a basement in the South.

Had a buddy in HS whose family had a basement (uptown). Bar, pool table, etc. It was awesome. Really old home or at least it seemed that way to my Kennah arse.

If you already have one, what's the best part?

We spend more time in our basement than on our main floor. Lots of natural light, and can walk right out to the patio and pool. No stairs.

That's what I fear if I ever wanted to build a house with a basement. I've been in houses with finished basements in Idaho and they are so awesome.

There's a spot on this property that's about 150 feet elevation. I think a basement is feasible there according to the soil survey map (as far as I know, which is very little), but I can imagine there might be a dearth of builders who know how to build one that won't have issues later on.

I’d love a mancave. Already have a pool table, but putting it in a basement equipped with a bar and tv would be heaven.

I’d love to have a basement. But I’m in south Louisiana so that ain’t happening. Louisiana really is the worst.

I feel like if I had a basement I'd be down there getting trashed more often than I'd like.

Something about a big screen and a basement bar that would be dangerous I think.

The basement in our New Jersey place we just sold had a wet bar and a 75 inch big screen, XBox, PS5, wifi, full bathroom, living room furniture, fridge, coffee bar, etc. It was a nice basement lair.

There are not too many houses up here in the Midwest that don't have basements.

Our house has a finished basement with 2 BDR downstairs.

Best of all are those houses with walkout basements.

If given the choice, simply for the shelter aspect, I'd rather have an above ground safe room. Factoring in expanded living space, though, makes a basement a plus. Growing up my neighbors had a big basement that they turned into a gameroom. It was cool, but being down there during a storm, looking up and seeing gas lines and such above your head will always make me a bit uneasy.

That's what we had...dad had a workshop down there but we also had a pool table, bar, little sitting area. Basically a 1970s party room (complete with red shag carpeting).

Mom would also make us go down there if we were cutting up too much upstairs.

Yes. When I lived in GA I had a huge unfinished basement. I made it my shop. It was awesome. It never got above 72 in the summer and below 50 in the winter.

No. Between foundation wall problems, sump pumps, radon, constant worrying about gutter draining far enough away from the foundation, etc. I’d would not have a house with a basement.

If you have kids, an unfinished basement is a game changer. That 70’s Show didn’t make that part up.

We have a sloping lot so a full basement that we built out 18 years ago. It’s awesome and added a lot of square footage.

Other than a pool table and big screen, having a safe area during storms is comforting.

I will add a qualifier, "Finished" basements are awesome. Not all basements are created equal and some are damp, dark and disgusting.

We have a finished basement with two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms at the family cottage with a full bar and it gets a lot of use. We have about 35 feet of sliding doors so we can watch the deer feeders, tip-ups and other wildlife that likes to wander through the backyard between the cottage and llake.

If fully finished, including a half-kitchen or better, absolutely. I love them.

I would never have a house w/out a basement. Best part of my house by far both with regards to enjoyment and safety.

EDIT: I should add that I have two 18" subs (6kW each) and I can blast those things at reference levels and my neighbors dont hear a damn thing while my couch feels like the epicenter of an earthquake.
