The 21st century is Disney World compared to previous centuries. If being civil were entirely based on religions centuries to millennia old, we would have turned some corners sooner, yeah?

“Keeping a person decent” is practically meaningless without a cultural frame. Inherently, the person making this statement is resting in the cultural tree of Christianity, and unknowingly chopping off the roots and branches that give it life.

Not really. I'll be the first to admit my beliefs as far as what I consider to be right and wrong align closely with what Christianity says but the core of what I believe has been around since way before Jesus. The way I see the Sermon on the Mount is that it's a great summary of the best parts of pre existing cultures/religions of the time. Shared values aren't owned by religions.
I don't ty to be what I consider a good person because I think it's what God wants or it'll get me into heaven. I try to treat people how I think they want to be treated because I want them to do the same to me. I fail at it often but I'm trying. If I end up burning in hell for that then so be it.

The 20th century is the bloodiest, most devastating century in human history.
While the West has not seen nearly as much bloodshed in the 21st century, it is clearly unraveling. Birth rates plummeting, increasing percentages of the population, on medications for anxiety or depression, lack of third spaces, political violence, self-medication, gambling, etc.
The West is in the middle of a spiritual crisis, but everyone only wants to talk about the consequences of that crisis rather than address-or even identify/recognize-the root cause.

Your understanding is wrong. Those views were radically different than anything that came before. Those cultures were “might makes right.” The Romans ridiculed early Christians because Jesus was crucified, the most indignant way to die. They couldn’t comprehend why an almighty god would suffer that death. It’s also why the Jews rejected Jesus. They expected a triumphant king-his second coming-rather than a humble servant.

Salvation is not earned, it’s freely given to those who have faith in Jesus.

Well no shite. They’re fictional characters and didn’t claim to be divine.
If you’re trying to argue that the people in the Bible are fictional characters instead of historical figures, then I would encourage you to do some research. I recommend The Historical Reliability of the Gospels by Craig L. Blomberg and Jesus and the Eyewitnesses by Richard Bauckham.

Since I was kid, I really struggled with the concepts of heaven & hell for one reason:
If I die & go to hell & many of my loved ones, my mom for example, are in heaven; how are they able to live in eternal peace & bliss knowing that I am in hell suffering & being tortured?
